The original Resident Evil made its debut in Japan on March 22, 1996, and was later released in the U.S., where it became a huge success. Resident Evil 2 and Resident Evil 3: Nemesis were immediately developed following the popularity of their predecessor, and were released in 1998 and 1999, respectively. The fourth game in the series, Resident Evil Code: Veronica, was released in 2000 for the Sega Dreamcast, and became the first Resident Evil title released for a non-Sony platform.
The series' creator, Shinji Mikami, decided to make the series exclusively for the Nintendo GameCube. The next three games in the series: a remake of the original Resident Evil, the prequel Resident Evil Zero (originally planned as a Nintendo 64 game) and Resident Evil 4, were exclusive to the GameCube. Currently, Resident Evil 5 is the next planned game in the series, and is expected to be released some time in 2009.
