The most common collectable item in Crash is the Wumpa Fruit. Collect 100 of them to get an extra life, after which the count resets toward the next extra life. Wumpa Fruit are either loose or found in boxes, which can contain a variety of other items or effects.

Boxes[edit]

Spread across the levels you will find many boxes (also referred to as crates), which you will have to break with a jump or a spin to collect their contents. By breaking all the boxes in a level (except of course the indestructible ones), you will eventually get a gem. The types of boxes that Crash can encounter are as follows:

Image Box Purpose
Crash Bandicoot sprite Basic Box.png Basic Contains a single Wumpa Fruit.
Crash Bandicoot sprite Bounce Box.png Bounce By repeatedly jumping on these boxes, you will get a Wumpa Fruit with each jump until they break. Hitting them with a spin will get you nothing.
Crash Bandicoot sprite Question Mark Box.png ? The contents of these boxes are unknown. Bonus round tokens can be found in certain ? boxes. Otherwise, they tend to contain large amounts of Wumpa Fruit.
Crash Bandicoot sprite Crash Box.png Crash Contains an extra life.
Crash Bandicoot sprite Aku Aku Box.png Aku Aku These boxes contain a mask of the sorcerer Aku Aku, who will follow you and protect you once from an enemy attack. Collecting two will give you double the protection, and with the third mask, you will become invincible for a short period of time.
Crash Bandicoot sprite TNT Box.png TNT Jumping on these boxes will activate a 3 second timer, after which the box explodes, so move quickly. Their explosion destroys any nearby crates, so make sure to collect any valuables before activating them, as TNT boxes also count toward the box total necessary for the gem. Hitting the TNT box with a spin causes the box to explode instantly, causing Crash to lose a life if he doesn't have an Aku Aku mask.
Crash Bandicoot sprite Checkpoint Box.png Checkpoint (C) When you lose a life, you will restart the level from the last C box reached.
Crash Bandicoot sprite Arrow Box.png Arrow By jumping on the boxes marked with an arrow, you can jump higher. You can only destroy them with a spin.
Crash Bandicoot sprite Iron Box.png Iron They are indestructible.
Crash Bandicoot sprite Iron Arrow Box.png Iron Arrow They have the same purpose as normal arrow boxes, but they are indestructible.
Crash Bandicoot sprite Exclamation Point Box.png ! By hitting these metal boxes, something inside the level will change. Their effect can be temporary or permanent. They usually make new boxes appear that were previously invisible.

Tokens[edit]

There are three types of tokens that can be collected to access the game's many bonus rounds. In the original game, clearing them successfully allows you to save your game and obtain a password. In the N. Sane Trilogy remake, clearing them will apply any collectables obtained in the bonus round (such as boxes, Wumpa Fruits, and extra lives) toward the level. The three types of tokens and corresponding bonus rounds are listed below.

Token Character Description
Crash Bandicoot sprite Tawna token.png Tawna By collecting all three tokens within a level, teleportation to a bonus level featuring Tawna will be unlocked. These levels are usually fairly easy to pass, and provide an abundance of Wumpa Fruits and extra lives.
Crash Bandicoot sprite N Brio token.png N. Brio Collecting all three tokens within a level will teleport you to a bonus level featuring Nitrus Brio. Like in Tawna's, here you can get Wumpa Fruit and extra lives. However, they have a darker setting and are more difficult to overcome.
Crash Bandicoot sprite Cortex token.png Cortex Collecting all three of these tokens within a level will open teleportation to a bonus level featuring Cortex. There are only two Cortex bonus rounds in the game. These are very difficult levels to pass, at the end of which you will get a key to access a secret level.
