When you first launch Darwinia, you are presented with a rendering of the Internet as you approach the world of Darwinia.

As you can tell when you are shown the inside of Darwinia, the display is mostly mouse driven, where moving the mouse adjusts the position of the cursor on the screen; the camera will turn towards the cursor when it moves. The only visible location, Garden, is blinking. Click on it to enter the region.

While the Demo missions provide a tutorial to guide you through the initial interface, the full campaign only provides tutorial information if you press H, hover near a point of interest, or wait for a period of time.

At any time, you can bring up the menu using Esc to either reset the region or to exit Darwinia.

Introduction screens[edit]

Darwinina, unlike most other games, randomly displays one of its several introduction screens. Some of these screens allow interaction (where help is shown by pressing H), and some will appear to be written in the style of bootloader demos from the 8-bit or 16-bit computing era.
