As Galuna Island was to Gray and the guild war was to Lucy, this chapter reveals the dark past of the young Queen of the Fairies herself, Erza Scarlet.

Natsu, Lucy, Gray, Erza, and Happy use the tickets Loke gave them in the previous chapter to unwind at Akane Resort, while new ally Juvia tags along. The relaxation proves to be short-lived when the group is attacked by Wally Buchanan, an old friend of Erza’s, who resolves to bring her back to the place where she spent her childhood: the Tower of Heaven, where children were made into slaves. While the group is puzzled by Erza’s shock and subsequent quick defeat, her friends (and Juvia) follow her to the Tower of Heaven.

Once there, the team struggles with a regretful Erza, and Natsu is attacked by Wally.

Battle 1: Natsu vs. Wally

Wally has quite the unconventional form of magic, making his moves a bit difficult to predict. In particular, he uses Polygon Magic, showcased by his block-like body. With this, he can split his body into multiple blocks, making them bounce up and down across the screen in front of him until his body materializes once again. He can also manipulate these blocks so that they shoot in front of him horizontally. Nevertheless, getting caught in either attack lends Natsu to an easy combo. Aside from his strange Polygon Magic, Wally can also use up his magic to toss a stick of dynamite up into the air, creating fireworks that spread out and hurt Natsu on contact.

Wally has a notable advantage in that his normal attacks consist of him shooting his gun, giving him undeniable range. One of his magic attacks has him shooting a larger and more powerful bullet from the gun; unlike his other attacks, this one can’t be avoided by backing away, and at times has the power to break a block, so the best Natsu can do is jump over his the bullet. This also applies for his teleportation attack, which allows his arm to materialize behind Natsu and shoot a bullet from behind. However, with the exception of his gun, Wally is an easy opponent that can be defeated by simply keeping a distance whenever Natsu has the need to charge magic. Maintaining a distance after each attack is the key to easy survival and victory.

With the rest of their team splitting away, Lucy and Juvia decide to team up with each other. And so, when Juvia becomes possessed by an opposing force, Lucy has no other option but to defend herself against her foe-turned-ally-turned-foe.

Battle 2: Lucy vs. Juvia

Juvia is even tougher than she was against Gray, continuously countering Lucy’s attacks or dodging them whenever she gets the chance. Fortunately, Lucy now has Virgo at her disposal (albeit with a new appearance more suited to Lucy’s tastes). As Virgo could do against Natsu, she can drill through the ground and come back up on Juvia’s position. Loke is another valuable ally for Lucy, with his light-based Regulus combo. While Aquarius remains useful, her attack takes a while to get started, giving Juvia a reasonable amount of time to counter.

As Lucy defuses the Juvia situation, Natsu continues through the Tower of Heaven toward the mastermind. Unfortunately, yet another lackey stands in his way, this time a hired assassin.

Battle 3: Natsu vs. Fukuro

Fukuro is yet another strange wizard. His usual magic attacks are executed through Jet Magic, in which he uses the large jetpack on his back to charge into Natsu at high speed. He can also launch the rockets on his back toward Natsu, though these can be easily avoided from a distance; if not, they push Natsu to the end of the screen before finally completing the hit. His B button attacks are unique in that he has the ability to launch Natsu up into the air and perform an air combo by repeatedly kicking off from him in mid-air. Fukuro’s air combos are further accommodated by his ability to use the rockets from his jetpack to blast through the air. Nevertheless, despite his common counters, Fukuro’s attacks can easily miss, leaving victory open for Natsu.

When Natsu is absorbed by Fukuro’s Absorption Magic, Gray arrives to save his friend and get the rescue mission back on track.

Battle 4: Gray vs. Fukuro

Against Gray, Fukuro moves around a lot, constantly dodging attacks with jumps. He also employs non-magic attacks much more often, attempting to launch Gray into the air with a hard knee and kick him back to ground. These aren’t as powerful as magic attacks and, due to not needing to charge, are more difficult to block or dodge on time. Ignore them and focus on counterattacking with strong magic attacks. Fukuro will block most of the time, but managing to catch him in an Ice Prison combo is worth the damage. An Ice Hammer also works well when Fukuro is in mid-charge. Unfortunately, Fukuro’s absorption of Natsu has given him a new magic attack to work with in which he shoots a fire blast from his fist, but like his rockets, this is easy to dodge.

As Gray and Natsu have finally disposed of Fukuro, Erza deals with a tricky opponent elsewhere in the Tower of Heaven.

Battle 5: Erza vs. Erza

Getting the upper hand in a battle with someone who has all the same techniques can prove difficult. However, you should be familiar with Erza as an opponent by now. Stay high in the air when the other Erza performs magic attacks, or counter with your own if the time is right. As always, Erza’s Flame Empress Armor is an easy choice to rack up damage due to its ability to combo and its flame properties. The rest is self-explanatory; control your Erza more wisely than the computer to defeat the mirror opponent.

After the battle, Erza finally encounters the mastermind behind the reopening of the Tower of Heaven: childhood friend Jellal Fernandes.

Battle 6: Erza vs. Jellal

Despite his status as boss of the final chapter, Jellal doesn't pose too much of a threat here; he'll leave his punches pulled for later. For now, learn his attack patterns. Jellal employs Heavenly Body Magic, allowing him to manipulate the energy of the stars. Since they don't waste much magic, he tends to shoot small meteors in sets of three quite often. These spread out further as they travel, making it impossible for Erza to jump over them and giving her no other choice but to block in time. Aside from his simple meteor bullet attack, Jellal's attacks are flashy and don't provide much room for error on Erza's part. When a glowing aura appears around Jellal, he turns his own body into a meteor, charging into Erza from the front and then continuing from the back, creating a combo. He can also form a black hole by simply raising his finger, which rams into Erza until it causes damage or disappears. Lastly, he can cause fiery meteors to rain down on Erza's position repeatedly, potentially breaking her block; back up at the first sign to avoid its range.

As Jellal reveals his master plan, Natsu races to the scene to help his troubled friend, leading into the final showdown.

Battles 7 & 8: Natsu vs. Jellal

As always, Jellal will be tougher than he was the first time. Focus on the queues he gives before each attack and you should be able to avoid them:

  • When Jellal raises his palms to the sky, he forms a black hole. A powerful attack that can amount to 14 hits but slow and easy to counter.
  • When he swipes his hand, he tosses spread bullets. These can be jumped over if Natsu is close enough to Jellal, but blocking is ideal.
  • When he lowers his body and begins to glow, Jellal will charge into Natsu with the speed of a meteor. Once again, blocking is ideal.
  • When Jellal holds up his palms so that they face Natsu and cups them, meteors rain down on Natsu's position. Back up if you have the time, as the long attack could break Natsu's block.
  • When Jellal raises one fist, he prepares for a non-magic combo that ends with him creating a blast of energy around his body.

If you manage to avoid enough of his attacks, clearing both rounds is a definite possibility.

Despite his defeat, Jellal's master plan continues. Erza attempts to sacrifice herself for the sake of stopping it, but Natsu refuses to let his friend die. The group escapes following the Tower of Heaven's destruction, and their adventure concludes until the next game.
