Yo-kai Watch (妖怪ウォッチ Yōkai Wotchi?) is a 2013 role-playing game originally released for the Nintendo 3DS. It was developed by Level-5 and published by Level-5 and Nintendo. The first installment of the Yo-kai Watch series, it follows the story of 11-year-old Nate Adams as he obtains the eponymous Yo-kai Watch, and with it, the ability to see Yo-kai. The gameplay revolves around befriending various Yo-kai to obtain their Yo-kai Medals, which allow them to be summoned in battle. The game is distinguished by its unique battle system, in which the player does not fight directly, instead choosing which Yo-kai to summon and playing minigames to make them unleash powerful Soultimate moves.

Yo-kai Watch was eventually released in North America in 2015 and in Europe in 2016. In Japan, it was also re-released on Nintendo Switch in 2019 and on iOS and Android in 2021. A sequel, Yo-kai Watch 2: Bony Spirits and Fleshy Souls, was released in 2014.

Gameplay[edit]

In the game, the player searches around the town of Springdale for Yo-kai using the 3DS's touchscreen. When the player encounters a Yo-kai, he or she enters into battle with it using up to six Yo-kai that he or she has befriended previously. The touchscreen is used during battles to rotate among the player's Yo-kai at will, with up to three being active at a time. It is also used either to clear up status effects on the player's Yo-kai or to charge up the Yo-kai's special Soultimate abilities via various minigames.

After a battle, the player may have a chance of befriending one of the enemy Yo-kai therein. This usually occurs at random, but the player may increase his or her chances of doing so by feeding them certain types of food during battle. Once befriended, a Yo-kai will give the protagonist a Yo-kai Medal, which allows them to be summoned in future battleds. Yo-kai can also be befriended at random through an in-game Crank-a-Kai capsule machine, activated up to three times a day by collecting in-game coins or using Play Coins. Certain Yo-kai are necessary for completing the game's main quest, and special rare Yo-kai are befriended through various sidequests.

Yo-kai have the capability to evolve into more powerful versions of themselves if they reach a certain level, or they can evolve by combining with particular items or other Yo-kai. The Yo-kai are divided among eight different classes, each with their own strengths and weaknesses. There are also Legendary Yo-kai that can only be obtained by collecting a particular set of Yo-kai listed in the Yo-kai Medallium, a compendium of the different Yo-kai the player has encountered or befriended.
