It's true the M4 is actually inaccurate, however firing this rife on semi is an absolutely useless gesture. True to form, game developers made the M4A1 inaccurate for added realism. Unlike its counterpart, the M16A2, the M4A1 has a much shorter barrel (it is a carbine) and thus less lands and grooves (rifling). With the decrese in spin on the bullet, it becomes less accurate. Shooting in semi automatic mode even at long ranges will make you miss more than you hit, similar to firing on full auto. If an OpFor is running away and you are able to get off 10 inaccurate shots on semi, why not get off 30 inaccurate shots in full auto mode? Soaking a target with fire is much more effective than taking potshots at it.

While having a shorter barrel than the 20in M16 series, the 11.5in AR15 I have fired retains plenty of accuracy. I have only had the opportunity to fire it out to 100yds, but with iron sites had no difficulty hitting reactive 8x8" plates from the standing unsupported. This does not account for the stress of a combat scenario as represented in AA, but does say something for the weapon's inherent accuracy. Not having fired a US gov't issue Colt M4, I cannot attest to it's accuracy, but I would be surprised to think it having a lesser degree of accuracy. Also, and this is only my opinion, I have found marksmanship generally easier in the real world than in AA.
