The personal computer (PC) is a versatile system for gaming, but is not usually classed as a games console. There are various different operating systems which run on a PC, with the most common being the Windows family, from Microsoft; almost all games released for the PC are designed for the predominant Windows operating system of the time. Windows can be classed into several groups, based on the kernel/core architecture, which is what decides whether a game will run on the computer:
- MS-DOS — outdated; MS-DOS–Windows 3.1
- Windows 9x — outdated; Windows 95–Windows ME
- Windows NT — outdated; Windows 2000–Windows XP
- Windows Vista — Windows Vista
While Windows is the predominant operating system, others exist, with the second most popular being Linux. Few games are released for Linux, since it holds a minority market share, but famous ones include:
