3D Dot Game Heroes is an homage to 8-bit gaming in the form of 3D action game with many similarities to the first Zelda game. The 3D graphics feature a stylistic nod to 8-bit games with characters and the surroundings made up of small cubes to represent a pixellated world made 3D.

While the game is considered by many to be short (6-8 hours) and very derivative, its stylish presentation and nostalgic appeal with references to numerous games from the 8-bit era have brought it a great deal of praise and strong reviews in Japan.
