When a Pokémon appears on the map, tap it to enter catching mode. In this mode, swipe upward on the screen to throw a Poké Ball; the faster/farther you swipe, the harder the ball is thrown and the farther it goes. If the ball hits the Pokémon, then the Pokémon may try to break free before the catch is successful. Occasionally, Pokémon will run away in a smoke cloud after breaking out of a Poké Ball, which means you can no longer attempt to catch them. If the Pokémon hasn't broken out after three shakes, the catch was successful and you keep the Pokémon, as well as candies pertaining to its evolutionary line.
