Threse are the Default controls for StepMania:

Main Functions
  •  ↑ : Tests the up arrow (P1).
  • Num 8: Tests the up arrow (P2).
  •  ↓ : Tests the down arrow (P1).
  • Num 2: Tests the down arrow. (P2).
  • : Tests the left arrow, also song selection's up scroll on songs (P1).
  • Num 4: Tests the left arrow (P2).
  • : Tests the right arrow, also song selection's down scroll on songs (P1).
  • Num 6: Tests the right arrow. (P2).
  • Esc: Back
  • Enter: Selects an option or song in game
  • F1: Insert Coin
  • F2: Reload metrics and textures
  • Printscreen: Takes a full screen shot of whatever is on screen
  • Return: Confirm
  • Scroll lock: Operator (brings you to the StepMania options menu at any given time)
  • Tab: Increases game speed to 4x when HELD (overridden when playing song)
  • ~: Decreases game speed to .25x when HELD (overridden when playing song)
  • ~ + Tab: Decreases StepMania run speed to 0x when HELD (overridden when playing song)


When playing a song
  • : hits left arrow
  •  ↓ : hits down arrow
  •  ↑ : hits up arrow
  • : hits right arrow
  • F5: Automatically ends / clears a song
  • F6: toggle AutoSync mode
  • F7: toggle assist tick
  • F8: toggle AutoPlay
  • F9: decrease offset
  • F10: increase offset
  • F11: decrease BPM of current segment (hold ALT for small increments)
  • F12: increase BPM of current segment (hold ALT for small increments)
  • Esc: = abort playing when HELD
  • Additionally, arrow keys can be hit by a set up of your own custom keys if you choose to do so in the options menu. This is neither limited to your keyboard either, as dance-pads, game controllers, and many other things can be configured to hit arrows in the StepMania options menu.
When in the StepMania file editor
  • Page Up / Page Down: Jump measure
  • Home / end: Jump to first / last beat
  • Ctrl + Up /  ↓ : Change zoom
  • Shift + Up +  ↓ : Drag area marker
  • P: Play selection (select something first!)
  • Shift + P: Play current beat until end
  • Ctrl + R: Record (arrow presses)
  • F4: Toggle assist kick
  • F5 / F6: Next/prev steps of the same steps type
  • F7 / F8: Increase/decrease BPM of current beat
  • F9 / F10: Increase/decrease stop at current beat
  • F11 / F12: Increase/decrease music offset
  • [ and ]: Increase/decrease sample music start
  • { and }: Increase/decrease sample music length
  • M: Play sample music
  • B: Add or edit a background change
  • Insert: Insert beat and shift down
  • Ctrl + Insert: Shift BPM changes and stops down one beat
  • delete: Delete beat and shift up
  • Ctrl + delete: Shift BPM changes and stops up one beat
  • Shift + Any num: Lay a mine
  • Alt + Any num: Add to/remove from right half
  • Esc: Takes you to Stepmania song editor main menu
