Magicians[edit]

The two magicians in Heroes of the Lance are the most important character, because of the vast array of special powers they can use. In order to use their magic without risking their life, Goldmoon and Raistlin should be in the front line (upper row); only if absolutely necessary, they should be the active character (upper-left).

Goldmoon, the cleric[edit]

The Blue Crystal Staff can be a deadly weapon if used (literally, with the "Use" command) against the most evil creature.

If Goldmoon dies, her Blue Crystal Staff can be picked up by Riverwind, Caramon, or Sturm. It is impossible to clear the game without this item. The spells available only to Goldmoon are highlighted in green.

Main attributes:
  • Strength: determines hit rate when attacking with a close-combat weapon.
  • Dexterity: determines hit rate when attacking with a ranged weapon.
  • Health points (HP): whenever a character gets hit by an enemy, he loses some; if health reaches zero, the character dies. Goldmoon can restore health and raise dead.
  • Constitution: determines how easily a character recovers health points.
Secondary attributes:
  • Wisdom: determines success rate when using Goldmoon's blue crystal staff.
  • Intelligence: determines success rate when using Raistlin's staff of Magius.
  • Charisma: determines friendliness when encountering a peaceful character; actually useless, because Heroes of the Lance features evil enemies only.

The six fighter characters in the game are rather interchangeable, depending on your playing style.

In the following table, characters are sorted by decreasing strength.

Caramon's spear and Flint's throwing axe should be picked up after every time they are thrown. Arrows and pellets are used up, but quivers and pouches can be found through the game.
