Journey (1983) round selection screen.png

Once you have inserted your coin into the cabinet of Bally Midway's 1983 arcade game Journey, then pressed the Start Button, you shall be treated to a cutscene of all five band members jumping into the Scarab Vehicle (taken from the front cover of their album Escape), then flying into that head from the game's title screen (taken from the front cover of their album Frontiers); the game shall then proceed to that round selection screen shown above, which shows the band's five stolen instruments in five galaxies. You will have ten seconds to direct the Scarab Vehicle towards the galaxy you want to retrieve the first instrument from by pushing the joystick towards it - and once you have done so, the game will proceed to the appropriate band member's round.

Microphone Round (Steve Perry)[edit]

JOU Microphone Round.png

At the start of this round, the text of "AVOID SWINGING GATES" will appear on the screen, as Perry gets out of the Scarab Vehicle and the gates start moving vertically (and horizontally) towards him; he must walk down towards his microphone, at the bottom of the screen, and once he has collected it, blast his way through the no-longer-swinging and now just horizontally-moving gates back to the Scarab Vehicle for 25 points apiece. If any of the band members have a "mishap" on their respective rounds, they will fall to the bottom of the screen, as part of Who's Crying Now is heard from those two General Instrument AY-3-8910s and lose a life (in this game, lives are shared between all five band members) - and the game will then return to the round selection screen (unless, of course, the band members happened to be down to their last shared life, for which case "GAME OVER" will appear in the centre of the screen).

Guitar Round (Neal Schon)[edit]

At the start of this round, the text "USE JOYSTICK TO THRUST" will appear on screen as Schon starts descending down towards his guitar at the bottom of the screen; he must avoid contact with the cavern's walls, and once he has collected his aforementioned guitar, blast his way through the now-freed beetles back to the Scarab Vehicle for 200 points apiece. The beetles will follow Schon around the screen - so you'll have to try not to let them overwhelm him.

Drums Round (Steve Smith)[edit]

At the start of this round, that text of "TURN ALL DRUMS BLUE" shall appear on the screen as Smith jumps out of the Scarab Vehicle and onto his first red drum (to turn it blue) and you shall have to push the joystick left or right to direct him towards another one; if he jumps on one after he turns it blue, it will disappear, and he must avoid falling to the bottom of the screen. Once he has turned all eight drums blue and collected his own at the top of the screen he must blast his way through the infinity symbols (sideways eights) back to the Scarab Vehicle for 50 points each.

Bass Round (Ross Valory)[edit]

At the start of this round, the text "MOVE LEFT OR RIGHT TO JUMP" shall appear on the screen as Valory jumps out of the Scarab Vehicle and onto his first platform (as a four-coloured obelisk emerges from it and elevates him), and you shall have to push the joystick left or right to direct him towards a second one; he must avoid falling to the bottom of the screen, and once he has collected his bass, he must blast his way through the cannons (which shall happen to be firing also-destructible long-playing records at him), back to the Scarab Vehicle, for 50 points apiece.

Piano Round (Jonathan Cain)[edit]

JOU Piano Round.png

At the start of this round, the text of "PUSH JOYSTICK UP TO JUMP" will appear on the screen as Cain gets out of the Scarab Vehicle, and then starts walking to the right, over the first conveyor belt; the player must make him jump up over all multicoloured flashing ridges (as he descends down towards his piano, at the bottom of the screen), and once he has collected it, he shall have to blast his way through the pink spheres, back to the Scarab Vehicle, for 50 points apiece. Once all five of the band members have retrieved their instruments, the game goes to a bonus round where they begin a spectacular concert at the Galactic Stadium, and if you are playing on an actual cabinet its tape of Separate Ways (Worlds Apart) shall start to play - and you shall have to use the joystick to make Herbie Herbert, the band's bodyguard, prevent the "groupoids" from invading the stage. But, once the inevitable has happened, the "groupoids" will steal all the instruments again; the game will then start over again at a higher level of difficulty, and continue until the band have run out of lives. It is also worth noting that if you push the Firing Button and both Start Buttons while pushing the joystick to the left, on the title screen, it triggers a credits screen (with digitized pictures).
