If you do use Icarids, it is imperative that your mages cast some magic buffs on them before they fly: Legions of Steel, Strength of Giants, Weapons of Sharpness, Quickness, Berserkers, Touch of Madness are all good spells. Mist (Evocation) or Arrow Fend (Enchantment) are good battlefield mass-effect spells.
