After the opening cutscene with Reimi, you'll be thrust into the ship's Battle Simulator, where you can learn all the ins and outs of combat in Star Ocean. Take some time to go through each option if you're not already well-versed in Star Ocean combat, then exit the simulator.
Watch the next cutscene, after which you'll have control of Edge in the crew's quarters. Examine the back of the battle simulator in the middle of this room and notice that an "M-sized object" would fit there. You don't have this strange object at the moment, so head east out of the room into the hallway.
