Street Fighter Alpha was the first entirely new Street Fighter game that Capcom made since Street Fighter II. With a completely new graphical look (very anime inspired) and game play engine, it provided fans of Street Fighter II with the closest that it would get to a sequel: a prequel. Entitled Street Fighter Zero in Japan, the Street Fighter Alpha series would relay the events that took place between Street Fighter I and Street Fighter II.

SFA drew upon many inspirations for it's content, not the least of which was the Street Fighter II anime that was released shortly before the game. SFA also contained a controversial cast. Out of the 16 original cast members from Super Street Fighter II Turbo (not including Akuma), only 4 were selectable in the first Alpha game: Ryu, Ken, Chun-Li and Sagat. M. Bison returned as the boss, who could be selected via a code, along with Akuma, and new secret character Dan. The rest of the cast was filled out by characters who previously appeared in the Final Fight series and Street Fighter I, as well as brand new characters such as Charlie and Rose, the former being the subject of Guile's revenge in SF2.

SFA also contained many new features, some of which were brought over from Capcom's successful Darkstalkers series. These new features included air blocking, multiple super meter bars, multiple super moves per character, counter attacks, chain combos, and taunts. Another new feature (which had no bearing on gameplay) was the little details added to make character interaction more interesting, such as dialogs between characters and alternate prefight animations. Like Super Street Fighter II, SFA was something of a project that was prematurely rushed to market, with palette swapped backgrounds shared between characters. It's sequel, Street Fighter Alpha 2, would serve as the full realization of the series.

Moves

Adon

Adon first appeared in Street Fighter as the second to last opponent, and was first selectable in Street Fighter Alpha. He became Sagat's student three years after Sagat became God of Muay Thai. Frequently likened to a "lesser version of Sagat", even though he strived to differentiate himself with more acrobatic techniques, Adon entered the first World Warrior tournament to prove he was more than that. The cocky Adon let his guard down when he faced Ryu, who took him out with a single Shoryuken. Afterwards Ryu went on to defeat Sagat, which would lead to Adon's eventual breakdown.

Adon was not mad at Ryu for defeating him, he was mad at Sagat for being unable to uphold Muay Thai's honor (conveniently forgetting how Ryu had bested him during the World Warrior tournament). He challenged Sagat for the title of God of Muay Thai and won, but the enraged Sagat had done so much damage to him in the fight that Adon had to be hospitalized for months.

Adon's injuries would eventually heal and a new fighter would captivate his attention. Rumor had reached his ears of a fighter who had mastered the power that had enabled Ryu to win the first World Warrior Tournament. Adon swore to find this mysterious fighter and claim the power as his own.

Akuma

Click here for more information about Akuma's other fighting game appearances.

Originally appearing in Super Street Fighter II Turbo as a secret character and hidden boss, Akuma was a hidden character in Street Fighter Alpha, before becoming a regularly selectable character in Street Fighter Alpha 2 and beyond. After murdering his own brother Gouken, sensai to Ken and Ryu, Akuma began to search the globe looking for worthy fighters to challenge. Secluding himself in the shadows, he watched small tournaments and street fights, desperately seeking someone who might be able to match his strength. He was eventually challenged by a man named Gen. Gen fought a vicious battle. He had even survived the Shun Goku Satsu by emptying his soul in time. Akuma began to wonder if this man was the worthy opponent he was searching for. However, he began to sense not all was as it seemed and when Gen's mouth began to bleed Akuma's suspicions were confirmed, his opponent was sick, and the fight was not fair. After being knocked to the ground, Gen told Akuma to kill him. Not wanting to carry the fight on any longer, Akuma left, infuriating Gen. After the fight, Akuma became obsessed with Ryu and awakened the "Dark Intent".

Ryu eventually found Akuma's island (known as Onigami Isle or the Gokuentou) and challenged him. The intense battle that followed ended in a draw; Akuma was impressed as this was the closest he had come to a defeat yet. Telling Ryu to find him again when he had embraced the Satsui no Hadou, Akuma struck his island with a powerful blow and disappeared. The island fell apart around Ryu, who was left in the ocean to contemplate Akuma's words. Leaving his destroyed abode, Akuma thought about all the fighters he had encountered and wondered with excitement if one day he would fight someone strong enough to kill him in battle. This thought drove him on, finding a desolate cavern (also known as Kiga Cave) he began to train and await the day he would fight Ryu again.

Two years later, Akuma began to search once more for worthy fighters whilst awaiting Ryu to embrace the Satsui no Hadou. He could have possibly fought Adon at this time (as Adon had been searching for Akuma). He encountered Gen once more and fought a final battle (the results of which are still unclear). However, unknown to Akuma, Ryu had rejected the Satsui no Hadou, declaring that a true warrior does not rely on violent intents.

Techniques

Name Description
Gou Hadouken Akuma gathers all of his ki into his fists, and releases it by pushing it forward through the air. He can release it at three different speeds. Opponents who do not block or dodge the resulting energy experience the same force as if Akuma had punched them himself. This is in fact the true Hadouken developed by Goutetsu before it is toned down by Gouken.
Hadou no Kamae Akuma clutches his hands together and pushes them, but nothing happens. This is a fake out move used to bait opponents into jumping from a real Hadouken where he can punish them with an anti-air. Only Shin Akuma has access to this move.
Zankuu Hadouken To the less experienced, performing the Hadouken takes so much concentration, that the fighter can do nothing else while summoning his ki. However, Akuma is so practiced at the technique, and so quick with its release, that he is indeed capable of launching the Hadouken down at an opponent from mid-air.
Shakunetsu Hadouken While forming the Hadouken, Akuma can add thermal energy to his ki. The resulting burst will light an opponent on fire if they are struck by it. The opponent will be knocked down if hit from up close, and stunned if hit from far away. It has the ability to do more damage than a normal Hadouken, but it takes Akuma more time to recover from this technique, making him more vulnerable to counter-attack.
Gou Shoryuuken Akuma crouches down low to the ground, before springing off the ground, leading with his fist. The force of the jump causes Akuma to rise off the ground, performing a ground to air uppercut. As with the Tornado Kick, Akuma is capable of knocking an opponent out with the first hit, while continuing to juggle them with subsequent hits. This is in fact the true Shoryuuken developed by Goutetsu before it is toned down by Gouken, and is a lethat assassination move.
Tatsumaki Zankuukyaku Akuma leaps off the ground, twisting his feet as he does. Then, extending one leg out, he approaches the opponent spinning around as if in a whirlwind. Since Akuma has a lot of power, as well as greater control over its expenditure, Akuma can juggle opponents with his kicks. Akuma can also initiate this move while in mid-air.
Zenpou Tenshin Akuma performs a short roll towards the opponent, passing them if they are close enough. This lets Akuma to dodge attacks and counterattack.
Ashura Senkuu Akuma has small mastery over the ability to employ his ki to move his body through space. While doing so, Akuma is invulnerable to attack. Akuma can move forward or backward, by a short distance or a long one. However, he becomes completely vulnerable immediately after leaving this state.
Hyakku Shuu Akuma jumps into the air where he can do five more attacks, which are:
_Hyakki Gou Zan Akuma does a tripping kick as he lands.
_Hyakki Gou Shou Akuma does a punch out of his jump.
_Hyakki Gou Sen Akuma flips into a kick out of his jump.
_Hyakki Gou Sai Akuma grabs the opponent by the shoulders and slams them into the ground.
_Hyakki Gou Tsui Akuma grabs the opponent and spins with them in the air before slamming them to the ground.
Tenma Kuujin Kyaku Akuma can perform a dive kick from the air.
Zugai Hasatsu Akuma does a hand slice, dealing two hits.
Senpuu Kyaku Akuma can perform a roundhouse kick that is a shortened version of his Tatsumaki Zankuukyaku.
Messatsu Gou Hadou Akuma concentrates all of his ki and infuses some thermal energy into a powerful Hadouken. The opponent will be scorched upon contact.
Messatsu Gou Shoryuu Akuma does two Gou Shoryuukens in a row, and if it's a level 3, finishes with another Gou Shoryuuken. This is an assassination technique developed by Goutetsu and has the potential to be lethal.
Tenma Gou Zankuu Akuma has mastered his Hadouken to the point that he can use a powerful version of it from the air. The ki can burn opponents and Akuma is thrown upwards from the force.
Shun Goku Satsu Akuma's signature super combo. Akuma Ashura Senkuus forward and if he comes into contact with an opponent, the screen will turn black and Akuma delivers the power of the 16 hells on the opponent. If the opponent is KO'ed by this it will be accompanied by a "ping" sound and the kanji 天.

Birdie

Birdie first appeared in Street Fighter as one of the British opponents, and was first selectable in Street Fighter Alpha. He is named after the Golfing term 'Birdie'. The other English character from the first Street Fighter; Eagle is also named after a golf term. He is depicted as a late 1970s British punk rocker.

Prior to his criminal career, Birdie was a professional wrestler, teaming with occasional rival Titanic Tim (from the Saturday Night Slam Masters series) as the "500 Million Trillion Powers." He turned to a life of crime when his wrestling career ended, doing some street fighting on the side to add to his income. His notoriety got him invited to the first World Warrior tournament. He was suffering from a particularly nasty strain of flu, however, and lost his fight with Ryu. The flu was also used to explain why Birdie was Caucasian in the original Street Fighter. Despite this setback, Birdie rose up the criminal ranks. He eventually became aware of an organization called Shadoloo and managed to use his criminal reputation to join them.

Sneaking into a Shadoloo data room, he learned about the Psycho Drive machine, not aware that M. Bison was watching him. Thinking he could use it to overthrow Bison and become lord of Shadoloo himself, he set out to find it. Bison sent Balrog to kill Birdie, but Birdie convinced Balrog to help him instead by telling him how the Psycho Drive could make them powerful. Hindered by Balrog's incompetence, however, Birdie couldn't find the Drive before it blew up.

Birdie is a hulking figure with dyed blonde hair, a leather jacket, several rings, and oddly pointed shoes. His unusual looking shoes are more common to punks in Japan, rather than the combat boots worn by punks in Birdie's native England. He also has a tattoo of a red heart on the side of his head. He also sports a patently impossible hole in the center of his mohawk, giving his unique hairstyle the appearance of a bird's beak. Birdie's appearance in the Alpha series is noticeably changed from his appearance in the original Street Fighter. In the original game, Birdie was a tall - though not particularly heavyset - Caucasian. In the Alpha series, Birdie became not only much more muscled and heavy, but even appears to be black.

Charlie

Charlie, known as Nash in Japan, was first introduced as a playable character in the original Street Fighter Alpha, but was already part of the series' backstory since Street Fighter II. Charlie is a first lieutenant in the United States Air Force. He wears green cargo pants and a yellow jacket. He has glasses which he takes off before a fight. He has an exaggerated hairstyle consisting of a large forelock of blond hair.

Charlie is first mentioned by name in the Street Fighter II storyline, where he is the deceased war buddy of Guile. Prior to the events of the game, Charlie was killed by M. Bison, although the exact circumstances are not clear (in the English localization of the game, it is said that he was taken captive during a mission and later died during the escape attempt). In the game, Guile enters the World Warrior tournament with the purpose of avenging his fallen friend's death. In Super Street Fighter II Turbo, a scene is shown of Guile visiting Charlie's grave.

In the Alpha storyline, Charlie was the previous U.S. Martial Arts champion for two years (a record succeeded by Ken) and was also the one who taught Guile some of his fighting techniques (explaining their similar fighting styles). In the game, Charlie is given the duty to track down Bison and uncover corruption within the American military. In his ending, Charlie defeats Bison, but only to be struck from behind by Bison.

Despite Charlie's death in the first Alpha game, he would return as a playable character in the two succeeding Street Fighter Alpha games. Street Fighter Alpha 2 features a different depiction of his death during his ending - after defeating Bison, he is shot from the back by his intended backup helicopter and falls from the waterfall. In Street Fighter Alpha 3, he has an ending where he actually survives battle and manages to destroy Shadaloo's secret base. In the console ports of Alpha 3, Guile is added to the playable roster as well. In Guile's storyline, he is ordered by his superiors to track Charlie, who has supposedly gone AWOL. In reality, Charlie was undercover to investigate Shadaloo and its connection to the military, whereas Guile was sent to put a stop to him without knowing it. After realizing, Guile defeats Bison and teams up with Charlie to destroy Bison's Psycho Drive. Guile escapes, while Charlie stays behind to hold off Bison and is presumed dead after the explosion.

Name Description
Sonic Boom Charlie focuses his fighting energy into his arm, and rips them through the air together at nearly the speed of sound. The resulting motion, along with his shout creates a coupled wave of compressed air that he can launch forward at three different speeds. Charlie's mastery with the move allows him to use it with only one hand.
Somersault Shell Charlie crouches to the ground, and gathers the energy he needs to perform a lightning-quick backflip, with both feet extended out towards the opponent. The speed of the flip is so quick that it creates a blade-like crescent through the air that can cut opponents who are caught by Charelie's kick.
Dash Charlie can run a short distance to get closer to the opponent.
Knee Bazooka Charlie thrusts his knee toward the opponent. He can use this move out of a dash.
Jump Sobat Charlie does a jumping roundhouse.
Step Kick Charlie kicks forward. It looks exactly like his normal roundhouse but has different properties.
Spin Back Knuckle Charlie turns his back to his opponent before he whips his body around with an extended fist. He strikes the opponent backhanded.
Somersault Justice Charlie does powered up versions of his Somersault Shell multiple times.
Sonic Break Charlie throws out several Sonic Booms at different heights. Pressing the punch buttons increases the Sonic Booms he throws out.
Crossfire Blitz Charlie does a flurry of kicks. This move has virtually no start-up lag or recovery.

Dan

Click here for more information about Dan's other fighting game appearances.

Dan Hibiki (火引 弾?) was introduced in Street Fighter Alpha. Dan is consistently portrayed as an arrogant, overconfident, yet utterly weak character in many of the games he is featured in. He is widely considered to be the comic relief of the series because of his over-the-top poses and battle cries.

After the release and success of Street Fighter II, rival video game company SNK created their own fighting game Art of Fighting. The principal character of this series, Ryo Sakazaki, not only bore a striking resemblance in appearance, fighting style, and name to Ryu, but had similar attire to and hair of the same color as Ken.

In humorous retaliation, Capcom included Dan as a secret character in Street Fighter Alpha. Dan's pink clothing is a spoof of Ryo's orange attire, while his head is a spoof of Robert Garcia's. His fireball is telling: instead of using both hands to unleash his Gadouken (as Ryu, Ken, and even Sakura do for the Hadouken), he propels it with one hand, like Ryo, Robert and Yuri do for the Kooh-ken. Dan can also taunt infinitely like the Art of Fighting games, unlike his fellow Street Fighter characters.

In Street Fighter Alpha 2, Dan is Ken's secret challenger (reached by finishing several fights in a row with super combos) and they exchange dialog, one line of which is Ken asking Dan if he knows the "art of fighting." One of Dan's win quotes in Street Fighter Alpha 3 is "I hate the art of fighting, but I want to be the king of fighters!" a direct reference to Art of Fighting and The King of Fighters series by SNK.

Dan has a similar outfit to Ryu and Ken, wearing a traditional Karate gi. Dan also wears a black undershirt like Ryo. His head and face closely resemble Robert from Art of Fighting, while his outfit is bright pink, reminiscent of Ryo's orange outfit in Art of Fighting. Though his fighting stance is similar to Ken and Ryu's, it is more "loose" and animated.

Due to his weak and slow moves, Dan is widely regarded as a joke character, not to be used for any serious competition. He is also popular as a handicap to skilled players, as his weakness makes winning matches more difficult when against notably powerful characters such as Ryu, Ken and Charlie. As such, selecting Dan can in itself be seen as a taunt, since doing so implies high confidence that a player is superior in skill to his or her opponent. Strangely enough, all these weaknesses and the sheer comedy value have combined to make Dan a campy fan favorite of sorts.

Story

Dan's father, Go Hibiki (火引 強?), was a rival of Sagat. Go gouged out Sagat's eye and Sagat beat him to death in retaliation. Because of this, Dan sought revenge on Sagat, training to become a fighter, but was expelled from Gouken's dojo when his motivations were learned. Dan thus developed a unique fighting which merged the techniques he learned with Gouken with Muay Thai elements, which he calls Saikyo-ryuu (サイキョー流?), "The Strongest Style", despite the complete weakness of his techniques.

After the events of Street Fighter Alpha 3, Dan believed he had achieved his revenge by defeating Sagat (who had actually thrown the fight), and his motivation switched to promoting and expanding his Saikyo-ryuu school, even to the point of offering exercise videos and correspondence courses. He has seemingly had some limited success promoting Saikyo-style. In SFA3, he was Sakura Kasugano's supposed sensei, who followed him around in order to meet Ryu. He's also good friends with Blanka too, since Blanka saved Dan when he was young.

Techniques

Name Description
Gadouken Dan gathers all of his ki into his fists, and releases it by pushing it forward through the air. Dan is able to release his ki using only one hand, though his ki concentration is too little to let the projectile last five seconds.
Koryuken Dan crouches down low to the ground, before springing off the ground, leading with his fist. The force of the jump causes Dan to rise off the ground, performing a ground to air uppercut. Dan's mastering of the technique is imperfect and thus it covers less space than a Shoryuuken.
Dankyuukyaku Dan leaps off the ground, twisting his feet as he does. Dan is able to get two feet off the ground instead of just one, but imperfect training means he can only do a maximum of three kicks.
Chouhatsu Dan holds his hands up while taunting the opponent. This move can damage the opponent in X-ism.
Zenten Chouhatsu Dan rolls forwards then taunts. This can also hit in X-ism.
Kouten Chouhatsu Dan rolls backwards then taunts. This can hit in X-ism, but it's pretty difficult.
Shagami Chouhatsu Dan taunts while crouching. This can hit in X-ism.
Kuchuu Chouhatsu Dan can even taunt in the air.
Saikyou-ryuu Bougyo Dan is able to push the opponent backwards if he manages to block an opponent's attack while midair.
Hisshou Buraiken Dan unleashes a fury of kicks and punches ending with a Koryuken. This move has extremely limited range and is entirely vulnerable if it misses, but deals a lot of damage.
Shinkuu Gadouken Dan gathers all of his excess energy and releases it as once. Due to Dan's imperfect ki control, the projectile doesn't move as far or deal as much hits as other supers.
Koryuu Rekka Dan has his own version of Ken's Shoryuu Reppa where he can do two Koryuukens at once. However, it has limited range and is very punishable if missed.
Chouhatsu Densetsu Dan does a series of taunts and rolls ending with him jumping and smiling at the player. Completely useless and should only be used for show.
Chouhatsu Shinwa Dan enters a state where any button press will give him a taunt. This lasts much longer and is no more useful than his Chouhatsu Densetsu. Only use for hummiliation.

Guy first appeared in the Final Fight series. He is the 39th Bushin ninja master, and wears a reddish-orange ninja gi with red sneakers. Guy is of Japanese descent. He is taught that the way of a Bushinryu of Ninjutsu decrees that one must fight against evil. Not much is known about Guy's past, other than he was trained by a Bushin-ryu master.

In the original Final Fight, Guy teams up with his training partner (later stated by Capcom that they have never met and the dialogue about him and Jessica being friends was added for the US version), Cody and the Mayor of Metro City, Mike Haggar, to save Jessica (Cody's girlfriend and Haggar's daughter) from Horace Belger (the leader of the Mad Gear gang). He defeated the Japanophile, Sodom in a famous match at an underground ring with many Mad Gear members watching (earning Sodom's eternal wrath in the process), and then goes on to Metro City's Industrial Area, where he defeats Rolento after being told he would make a good soldier. He re-unites with Haggar and Cody at the very end to defeat Belger and rescue Jessica. Once she is rescued, Guy walks away, but not before he knocks Cody down to allow Jessica to confront him, after being appalled by the lack respect he saw towards her.

In Final Fight Revenge, Guy sensed evil within Metro City once more, and goes to destroy it. Strangely enough, it was Belger, the departed Mad Gear leader, resurrected as a zombie. He defeats Belger, but is concerned that the evil of the man has corrupted him. He sets out to purify his body and mind, and begins to travel the world to achieve this, train, and discover the true power of his fighting style as well. So focused was he in attempting to discover the power of Bushin, he was not around to help save the 37th Bushin Master Genryusai and his daughter Rena (Guy's fiancé) in Final Fight 2 (although he writes Haggar, Carlos, and fellow Bushin ninja Maki a thank you letter upon hearing that Genryusai and his fiance are saved and Mad Gear is finally destroyed for good). It is highly assumed that Guy's failure to help with the rescue of his fiance and master was likely due to his battles during the Street Fighter Alpha series.

Guy reappeared in the Street Fighter Alpha franchise, and in Street Fighter Alpha 2 he sought out his master (the 38th Bushin master) Zeku, whom he needed to defeat in order to become the next Bushinryu master. Guy eventually does defeat his mentor, becomes the 39th Bushin Master, and is charged with bringing down Shadoloo. He also could have fought Sodom and Rolento during this time, but it is unknown. Shortly as foretold in Street Fighter Alpha 3, Guy is finishing up his travels and returning to his home, Metro City, but is still focused on his quest of destroying Shadoloo and its head, M. Bison. He meets up with Rose, realizes her connection to Bison, and urges her not to go on a suicide mission in destroying him. She refuses and they fight, and despite losing the battle, Guy more or less resolves to follow her and help her out.

He also meets up with his friend Cody during this time, and is dismayed to discover that he has escaped from jail and is basically a thug. The two battle and Cody wins, but they both calm down and Guy realizes that Cody is still a good person. He notes that all the people Cody has fought over the years have been criminals and dregs on society, despite his seeming addiction to fighting. The two part amicably and Guy wishes his friend the best. He eventually catches up to Rose's unconscious body, and carries her to the hospital, but feels a flash of evil (Bison is now in control of Rose's body). He shakes it off, but is concerned. Soon after, Guy realizes that as Bushin master, being decisive in his actions is key, morality is irrelevant. To that end, he adopts an "end justifies the means" philosophy.

Ken

Click here for more information about Ken's other fighting game appearances.

Ken, like his friend and rival Ryu, first appeared in the original Street Fighter. However, despite this appearance, Ken did not officially participate in the first Street Fighter tournament; instead, he fought in (and won) the premiere U.S. Martial Arts tournament that had been previously won by Charlie, as well as meeting a girl named Eliza, who became his girlfriend. After winning the U.S. martial arts tournament, Ken returned to his training ground to tell his master Gouken the good news. There he witnessed his master's death at the hands of Akuma. Enraged and grief stricken, he attacked Akuma, only to be defeated.

He began wandering the world in search of Akuma, and his friend and fellow student Ryu. He wanted to tell Ryu what happened to their master and also hoped to win a match against him. He eventually finds Ryu in seclusion. Ryu is dejected upon seeing his long-time friend, but Ken makes him go try out a spar anyway. Over the next few days, Ken realizes how stressed out his best friend is since his fight with Sagat. Ryu explains to Ken that deep within him there is a burning rage- a power trying to overcome him. Giving Ryu his red headband, Ken tells him to stay focused, which greatly cheers Ryu up. Ken returns home and begins training harder. Knowing even with his recent feelings, that Ryu is always stronger than he looks.

Ken begins to wonder about his own life. Ryu seemed to be on the right track again, but what of him? Along the way to prove himself again, he encounters Karin who tells him she has followed his career and is trying to best her rival Sakura to prove she is superior. Ken advises her it's good to have a rival, but not for supremacy, but to keep on training harder and focusing. With this, Ken finds himself again and is focused once more. Going off to meet up with Sakura, they too have a friendly match and Ken finally realizes that Ryu has the right idea all along. Both he and Sakura begin to travel to find Ryu, but find out that he's being brainwashed by the dictator M. Bison. Ken and Sakura both take Bison on together to distract him as Sagat (who had come along to also find Ryu struggling against Bison) took Ryu under control. Ryu eventually came to and slammed Bison away with the help of Ken, then talked to each of his friends — he told Ken to wait for his rematch, noting he still had much to learn. Ken himself promised to train harder.

Name Description
Hadouken Ken gathers all of his ki into his fists, and releases it by pushing it forward through the air. He can release it at three different speeds. Ken's Hadouken, though quite effective, isn't as concentrated as Ryu's, and he has a slower recovery time.
Shoryuuken Ken crouches down low to the ground, before springing off the ground, leading with his fist. The force of the jump causes Ken to rise off the ground, performing a ground to air uppercut. Ken has practiced this move to the point where, at its strongest, Ken can summon a field of flames around his fist, setting opponents on fire if it connects. Ken performs the Shoryuken in such a way that it allows him to connect with the opponent three times before knocking them down or back. He also leaps forward a lot farther then Ryu when performing them.
Tatsumaki Senpuukyaku Ken leaps off the ground, twisting his feet as he does. Then, extending one leg out, he approaches the opponent spinning around as if in a whirlwind. Ken can spin his body so quickly, that it allows him to hit opponents with this attack up to five times without knocking them down. Ken can also use this move while midair.
Zenpou Tenshin Ken is able to perform a defensive roll. The roll allows him to counterattack and he can even roll through them to attack them from behind.
Zentou Ken tries to roll forward but fails and lies on the ground. This is a fake out move designed to attack an opponent who tries to counter attack a Zenpou Tenshin. Ken lies so low on the ground that most standing attacks can't hit him, but crouching attacks will.
Inazuma Kakato Wari Ken does a high axe kick that can hit multiple times.
Izumu Kakato Wari Ken does a high roundhouse that hits multiple times.
Ushiro Mawashi-geri Ken does a powerful side kick that sends opponents flying.
Shoryuu Reppa After many years spent on focusing on the strength of his Shoryuuken, Ken is able to perform multiple shoryuukens back to back. He does two normal shoryukens, and if it is a level 3 super, finishes off with a powerful burning Shoryuuken.
Shinryuuken Ken also developed another technique based on his Shoryuukens. He can now do a deadly ascending spinning Shoryuuken. Tapping the Punch or Kick buttons during the move can increase the number of hits in the super. The number of hits are also dependent on the level of the super.
Shippuujinrai Kyaku Ken didn't only focus on his Shoryuukens, he also developed a new technique with his Tatsumaki Senpuukyaku. Ken does a series of roundhouse kicks and ends with an ascending Tatsumaki Senpuukyaku.

M. Bison

Click here for more information about M. Bison's other fighting game appearances.

During the events of Street Fighter Alpha, Shadoloo came to the attention of Interpol, which sent Chun-Li (an operative with a personal vendetta against the crime lord, who had killed her father) to thwart Bison's plans. Chun-Li and M. Bison eventually confronted each other and battled. M. Bison defeated Chun-Li and then escaped on his helicopter while mocking her and promising to kill her in the same manner he killed her father if she confronts him again. During the events of Alpha or Alpha 2, M. Bison also came into conflict with Rose, a mysterious woman who wielded Soul Power, the opposite of Bison's Psycho Power. This fact and the fact that her quest was to stop any and all of M. Bison's evil plans indicate the intricate connection between the two, and would later be revealed in Street Fighter Alpha 3.

Most likely during the events of Street Fighter Alpha 2, the Psycho Power began exceeding the limits of his body. Having predicted this event, M. Bison had his scientists engineer a body that he could transfer his essence to, but that body, Cammy, escaped from Shadoloo's conditioning. M. Bison then turned his sights to Ryu, one of the most powerful fighters in the world, and the personal nemesis of Bison's former underling, Sagat. Bison defeated and captured Ryu and subjected him to intense psychological conditioning; when Sagat objected, M. Bison turned Ryu on him, telling him he could finally have his rematch. While Sagat battled Ryu, Ryu's friends Ken and Sakura fought M. Bison. With Sagat's urging, Ryu comes to his senses and forces M. Bison to retreat to the Psycho Drive, which restored his power.

In Street Fighter Alpha 3, USAF officers Charlie and Guile are on a mission to stop the dictator from using his new creation, a satellite (featured in Street Fighter Alpha 3), which can enhance his Psycho Power abilities. Guile and Charlie are joined by Chun-Li, and the three of them battle M. Bison. In order to take down Shadoloo's leader, Charlie keeps fighting him while the base is set to explode, and eventually sacrifices his own life. M. Bison's soul, however, ended up surviving the explosion and took control of Rose. It is revealed that, while trying to master Psycho Power, Bison had to expel all the humanity and good in his soul to accommodate and supplant the intense energy the power gives him, and that Rose is actually the formation of all of M. Bison's good energy. He stayed inside of Rose's body until his Shadoloo scientists could forge a new body for him, the body seen in Street Fighter II. This body, however, was much weaker, since, having inhabited his "good side"'s soul for a period of time, he retained both his good and evil energies as he transferred to his new body, thus making his Psycho Power considerably less effective.

Rose

Rose is a fortune teller from Genoa and sensed that Doomsday was approaching, and knew a person of great evil was causing it. She found the source of the evil in Bison and defeats him, thinking she has rid the world of him for good. Unfortunately, by reading her tarot cards she discovered Bison was still alive.

In Street Fighter Alpha 3, she faces Bison once again and finds out that she and Bison share the same soul. Bison outmatches her as he takes total control of her body. There she lay unconscious where Guy (who she meets earlier on when he goes after Shadoloo) finds her. When Bison is killed by Charlie (who sacrificed his own life in the process), Bison's soul went to his new host, Rose.

Bison stayed in and controlled Rose's body until a new, albeit weaker, body was made for him during the time of Street Fighter II. Akuma killed Bison during the second World Warrior tournament, sending his soul to hell with the Shun Goku Satsu. What became of Rose after this is still in question.

Rose is slender, has long dark wavy hair that flows outward horizontally, violet eyes, a fair complexion, and a small mouth with full lips. Most official artwork of Rose make her appear to be puckering her lips. In battle, she wears a loose red evening gown with large gold buttons, and a large golden scarf around her shoulders and arms. By channelling her mysterious Soul Power through it, she is able to make the scarf glow, and wield it in such a way that is particularly damaging to her opponents. Rose also wears a dark coloured body stocking, and manages to fight capably while wearing high heels.

Rose has attacks and techniques that take advantage of the Street Fighter Alpha game engine and playing style. She is relatively simple to play as, designed to allow players new to Street Fighter Alpha to use a new character with a control scheme similar to Ken or Ryu's. She has short ranged attacks in Street Fighter Alpha, but by Street Fighter Alpha 3, most of her normal attacks had been modified to strike from a very long range.

Ryu

Click here for more information about Ryu's other fighting game appearances.

In the original Street Fighter, Ryu is one of the participants of the World Warrior tournament. After defeating all challengers, his skills earn him the right to fight its host, Sagat. Despite nearly losing against the "Emperor of Muay Thai," Ryu secures a difficult victory, and is crowned champion.

Later games elaborate on the final battle between Ryu and Sagat. In this version of the battle, Sagat nearly beats Ryu into unconsciousness. Ryu, however, having such a strong desire to win, allows himself to be engulfed by the Satsui no Hadou and he strikes Sagat with a nearly-fatal Metsu Shoryuken that it not only knocks Sagat unconscious but also marks his chest with a great scar. After regaining consciousness and discovering what had happened, Sagat swears vengeance on Ryu.

In the Street Fighter Alpha series, Ryu leaves Sagat behind and returns to his home only to find that Gouken, his master and adoptive father, has been murdered. Learning that Akuma had fought and killed his adopted father, Ryu began to travel the world to find this man.

He encounters and fights Akuma on a secluded island known as Gokuentou, but Akuma was only testing him. He senses that Ryu has the same powers as he does, and tells Ryu about the Satsui no Hadou - a power that consumes the practitioners of their shared fighting style, driving them to win even when it means killing the opponent. Ryu refuses to unleash this power within, and Akuma uses his fist to smash the island, leaving Ryu stranded.

Sometime after escaping the island, Ryu battles Ken and loses. Ken realizes Ryu is not himself and has been deeply troubled since his last victory over Sagat. He gives him his red hairband as a reminder to stay focused, which Ryu was sincerely grateful for. Soon thereafter, a fan of his, named Sakura, comes up and expresses her desire to train under him. Ryu replies that he himself still has much to learn, but allows Sakura to take a picture of him. She swears to make him accept her eventually.

Two years later, Ryu continues to be troubled by what Akuma had told him, compounded by his encounter with Rose, who has intricate ties to M. Bison. She tells him that he cannot defeat Bison unless he fights him at the cost of his soul. True to form, when Ryu confronts Bison, he is defeated despite putting up a valiant fight. Bison takes the semi-conscious Ryu and begins brainwashing him, using the revelation that the Satsui no Hadou - the dark power Ryu struggles to avoid using - is akin to Bison's own Psycho Power.

This scene is interrupted by the entrance of Sagat, Ken, and Sakura, each of them having followed Ryu for their own reasons. While Ken and Sakura distract Bison, Sagat challenges the brainwashed Ryu (different versions of this story coexist; in one version, Sagat is offered this battle as an enticement to stay with Shadoloo.) Sagat quickly notices the effects Bison's brainwashing have had on Ryu, and, at Sagat's urging, Ryu comes to his senses and helps Ken and Sakura force Bison to retreat.

Techniques

Name Description
Hadouken Ryu gathers all of his ki into his fists and releases it by pushing it forward through the air. He can release it at three different speeds. Opponents who do not block or dodge the resulting energy experience the same force as if Ryu had punched them himself.
Hadou no Kamae Ryu cups his hands together then pushes forward but nothing happens. This is a good move to confuse opponents.
Shakunetsu Hadouken Ryu is able to infuse thermal energy into his ki. The resulting burst will light an opponent on fire if they are struck by it. The opponent will be knocked down if hit from up close, and stunned if hit from far away. It has the ability to do more damage than a normal Hadouken but it takes Ryu more time to recover from this technique, making him more vulnerable to counter-attack.
Shoryuuken Ryu crouches down low to the ground, before springing off the ground, leading with his fist. The force of the jump causes Ryu to rise off the ground, performing a ground to air uppercut. Ryu can rarely strike his opponent more than once before knocking them to the ground but it can happen depending on the distance to the opponent and the level of strength used.
Tatsumaki Senpuukyaku Ryu leaps off the ground, twisting his feet as he does. Then, extending one leg out, he approaches the opponent spinning around as if in a whirlwind. Since Ryu puts all of his ki into the attack, it immediately knocks down the opponent on the first hit. Ryu is also able to use this in the air.
Seichuu Nidan Tsuki Ryu holds out his elbow and dashes at the opponent, hitting them at the solar plexus. The move inches Ryu closer to the opponent. This move resembles the Hatobi Kutaki from Super Street Fighter II Turbo.
Sakotsu Wari Ryu rushes forward with a high fist than he eventually turns downward, striking opponents on the head. Opponents must block high in order to avoid taking damage from this attack.
Senpuu Kyaku Ryu does a hopping roundhouse kick similar to a Tatsumaki Senpuukyaku, but it last shorter and only hits once. This move moves Ryu forward a little bit.
Shinkuu Hadouken This super move is a special version of the Hadouken. The excess energy gathered throughout the fight is gathered into a single burst of energy before Ryu releases it all at once. This compressed Hadouken has the ability to strike an opponent multiple times before dissipating. The amount of hits it deals is dependent on the level during A-ism. It also has the ability to cancel out, and pass through, oncoming projectiles. The X-ism version is bigger and more powerful.
Shinkuu Tatsumaki Senpuukyaku Ryu rears back as he gathers his excess energy then does a powered up version of his Tatsumaki Senpuukyaku. This version is entirely stationary, and opponents that get caught in it will get juggled by the kicks. The higher the level of the super, the more kicks dealt. Against an airborne opponent it hits far less.
Metsu Shoryuuken Ryu, through pure will to win, does a crippling elbow to the gut, then two powerful Shoryuukens. This is the move that gave Sagat his scar and allowed Ryu to win the first World Warrior tournament.
Shin Shoryuuken If Ryu is too far away to fully connect Metsu Shoryuuken's initial gut punch, he will use a weaker version of the Metsu Shoryuken, which is still stronger than a regular Shoryuuken.

Sagat

Click here for more information about Sagat's other fighting game appearances.

Sagat first appeared as the final challenger in the original Street Fighter. He returned as the second to last boss in Street Fighter II, and was first selectable in Street Fighter II Champion Edition. Sagat won the title of Emperor/God of Muay Thai from Nuah Kahn as a teenager, and became a national hero in Thailand. At the end of the first World Warrior tournament, only one fighter managed to reach Sagat: a young martial artist named Ryu. Initially, Sagat was able to pin Ryu, and was sure that he was the winner of the match. However, Ryu became desperate to win the fight and was consumed by the Satsui no Hadou and executed the Metsu Shoryuken, grievously wounding Sagat and leaving a massive scar across his chest.

During the alpha series, Sagat's former student Adon mocked his teacher for losing to Ryu and challenged him for the title of God of Muay Thai. His rage blinded him, and Sagat lost to Adon, but not before beating the younger man so hard that he would be in traction for four months. Consumed with rage and hatred, Sagat eagerly joined the criminal organization known as Shadoloo. M. Bison had offered him Shadoloo resources to find Ryu and provide Sagat with a rematch. Sagat's nearly indomitable power provided him with the position of Bison's personal bodyguard, one of the feared Shitennō (四天王) or Four Heavenly Kings of Shadoloo.

During his tenure in Shadoloo, Sagat encountered Dan, now an adult seeking revenge for his father's death in the fight with Sagat. Sagat realized how anger can make people do things they regret, so he purposely lost the fight (Although Dan doesn't believe that he did), which allowed Dan to defeat him and satisfy his anger.

Sagat realized that his scar was a result of the killing intent which possessed Ryu called the Satsui no Hadou. Finally, he understood that true rivals should not be blinded by rage and hatred, nor be seduced by it, and realized Bison's real intentions.

However, Bison presented him with a brainwashed Ryu, and told Sagat he could have the rematch he always wanted. Despite Sagat's disappointment with fighting a corrupted opponent, Sagat still fought Ryu. To break Bison's mind control, he implored to Ryu that a true warrior would not give in to such treachery. Ryu awakened from Bison's control and, rejecting the Satsui no Hadou, drove Bison off. Sagat finally realized that rivalries must have their limits.

Name Description
Tiger Shot Sagat is capable of gathering his ki into his fists, and releasing it by pushing it out into the air. The result is a surge of energy that can travel towards his opponent at three different speeds. Due to Sagat's height, most opponents can duck this projectile.
Ground Tiger Shot Sagat knows that many shorter opponents can simply duck under his normal Tiger Shot, so he trained himself to be able to create a similar projectile closer to the ground. While this projectile can be easily jumped, Sagat can throw a series of Tiger Shots at various heights and speeds to keep the opponent guessing.
Tiger Uppercut After being defeated by Ryu's devastating uppercut, Sagat withdrew and began a very intense training period. So astounded that he was defeated by such a move, he was determined to perfect a similar uppercut. Sagat can only access this in X-ism.
Tiger Blow This is Sagat's uppercut before he perfected it in Street Fighter 2. The Light version only hits once but the stronger versions hit multiple times.
Tiger Crush Another versatile move in Sagat's limited arsenal, the Tiger Knee Crush allows Sagat to leap forward into the air with his knee extended at a lightning quick speed. He can often take opponents off guard. Although the move begins on the ground, the attack takes place high off the ground.
Fake Kick Sagat bends his knee as if preparing for a kick, but goes back into his standard stance. This is a useful fake out move.
Tiger Cannon Sagat concentrates all of his fighting energy and releases it as a projectile. The projectile hits multiple times and can burn the opponent.
Tiger Raid Sagat does a flurry of kicks before finishing with a side kick. If it's a level 3 super, his finishing kick will be infused with fire.
Tiger Genocide Sagat performs a low Tiger Knee Crush, and immediately follows that up with a high Tiger Uppercut, with a last Tiger Uppercut for his level 3 super. He has limited invulnerability at the start of the move, which gives him a very good chance at passing through projectiles. However, the move leaves Sagat rather vulnerable to counter attack if blocked.
Angry Charge The scar on Sagat's chest reminds him of his painful defeat at the hands of Ryu. However, he can use the angry memories invoked by the scar to power-up his next attack.
