Super Smash Bros. Brawl is the third iteration of the Super Smash Bros. series. Although originally suggested to be a launch title for the Wii, Super Smash Bros. Brawl was delayed several times and eventually was released on January 31, 2008 for Japan, on March 9, 2008 for North America, and then on June 27, 2008 for Europe and Australia. It is among the few Nintendo games to integrate online play on the Wii via the Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection.

Gameplay
Some pretty big newcomers have joined the Super Smash Bros. lineup, namely Solid Snake of the Metal Gear series and Sonic the Hedgehog from the Sonic the Hedgehog series. Additionally, Meta Knight from the Kirby series, Lucas from Mother, Pit from Kid Icarus, Wario from Warioware, Ike from Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance, a Pokémon Trainer from the Pokémon series, Diddy Kong from the Donkey Kong series, and a modified version of Samus named Zero Suit Samus are also newcomers. Mario, Donkey Kong, Link, Samus, Yoshi, Kirby, Fox, Pikachu, Bowser, Peach, Zelda, and the Ice Climbers continue their appearances in Super Smash Bros. Brawl.

Additionally, Meta Knight from the Kirby series, Pit from Kid Icarus, Wario from his own series of games, Ike from Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance, a Pokémon Trainer from the Pokemon series, and Diddy Kong from the Donkey Kong series are also newcomers. Mario, Donkey Kong, Link, Samus, Yoshi, Kirby, Fox, Pikachu, Bowser, Peach, Zelda, and the Ice Climbers have also been confirmed to continue their appearances in Super Smash Bros. Brawl.
Among the newcomers is a modification to Samus, officially known as "Zero Suit Samus", only available by using her final smash. Samus's armor will break off into throwable items, revealing her "Zero Suit", which is basically a blue jumpsuit. Samus has been revealed in this form to wield a laser gun that can turn into an energy whip. The mentality of Samus' new ability is the first to be seen in a Super Smash Bros. game. It is currently not known how exactly this distinguishes Super Smash Bros. Brawl's gameplay from the identical gameplay traditionally enforced since the first iteration of the series, Super Smash Bros..
Recently, Nintendo has released that they will put in one or two non-Nintendo party characters that appeared on a Nintendo system besides Snake. Also, the character(s) will be unlockable.
The Super Smash Bros. Brawl website now features daily weekday updates about new features, characters, and items within the game.
