I'm looking to convert a lot of screenshots and you're responsible for a lot of em. Do you remember if you captured any of the screenshots below? If not, remember where they came from? I would share more, but can only generate 500 at a time!

:Hi Trig Jegman. Yeah, I captured a lot of those images personally, especially the single screen games like Combat, Bubble Bobble, Lode Runner, and Chack'n Pop.  Other games like Castle Excellent and Athena were done so long ago, I'm not sure I'd be able to locate them again if I tried.  I have a tendency to add markup to them in the process of making them consumable for a walkthrough.  I know this isn't the most satisfactory answer, but it's the best I have right now.  If I somehow conjure up the source for some of the other images, I'll let you know.  But I'm more likely to stumble across them accidentally than intentionally.  <span style="color:red">Pro</span><span style="color:grey">cyon</span> 03:01, 21 January 2022 (UTC)

Virtual console vs system category
Hey Procyon,

Hi Proc, I'm just looking for some logistical support. So on main game pages where a retro game has been re-released for the Wii U Virtual Console, we have also been categorizing it under the Wii U. However, now I am re-thinking this. I feel like the Wii U category should be reserved for non-Virtual Console games only (i.e. modern physical releases and their digital counterparts). Because right now we have retro games appearing in the Wii U category, when I think they should only appear in the Wii U Virtual Console category. That way, the two lists of games are separate. I can see how someone might argue that the Wii U VC games are on the Wii U, but if we split it out there won't be redundancy. Thoughts? Before I do more RodKimble cleanup I would like to have a firm strategy. -- 18:36, 4 March 2015 (UTC)
No problem! After I finish the RSE guide, I'm going to apply the new templates me and Prod made to the FRLG pages too - Hopefully, it'll decrease the file size for them. Then I'll probably check out the other Pokémon guides to see what they're like, and maybe go onto a different franchise. Pakuchi -- Someone! Anyone! Respond! 13:54, 1 February 2022 (UTC)

:Hi Notmyhandle, I completely agree with you that VC games are not Wii U games, and having them in a separate category would be the best approach.  The problem I have, however, is what happens when Nintendo makes a new system, say the Wii U Me, or the 4DS, and they start re-releasing all these same games for the new system.  Do we have to constantly update the info boxes with more and more release info?  I wish it were sufficient to label all VC games under one category, but then I realize that, for example, some VC games only appeared on one device, and not others, so we need to have some way to make it clear to the user which system they're available on.  It's kind of a mess.  Anyway, I'm going off on a tangent to your original question.  I definitely say no to the general Wii U category, and yes to something else, I just wish it didn't have to be a separate VC category for every system a game was ever released on... ==I need some guidance==
Hi Procyon! Um, honestly I am kind of embarrassed on pinging you about this considering that you are the head of StrategyWiki, but the thing is, I want to ask for guidance from you regarding about some of my guides because recently I have been thinking of something, I want to know what you think and what will be your advice to me regarding about this, this will be somewhat long so I hope you have time to read, also thank you very much for writing on my Talk page along with Prod, so here it is, I've been thinking of this for quite a while now.

::Great, I can continue working on the cleanup. Good point about the common category. That brings up another category that I've been using to compliment the virtual console categories and hopefully fix that problem in the future. :Category:Nintendo eShop is the distribution service common to 3DS and Wii U VC.
You see, I have these 2 games named Astrobatics and Alien Sky that I made a Stage 2 guide from, and what bothers me is that no matter how much I think of how to improve the guides for these 2 (I can still improve them, in fact 2 more overhauls each but it is not that significant anymore) I can't really think of what more I can provide for these 2 games to make the guides for them Stage 3 eligible, the issue I am thinking about is its levels, or missions as what the games refer, it is some sort of a real time mission
::So we have three categories: one for each virtual 'console', and one for the common service. Why have the virtual console categories for 3DS and Wii U VC at all then? Well - they do not have 100% of the same games. Most of the time they do, and it's hard to verify this just through Wikipedia links or online text resources, but there are exceptions. I think mobile games (GB/GBA) are less likely to end up on the Wii U VC. But who knows, they could unify their platform completely (a smart strategy for the future of game companies) so that both lists are the same.
::Honestly, without comparing two active lists of what can be downloaded from both consoles (3DS and Wii U), we won't know when the lists match each other. Also, the Wii U often had access to the Nintendo eShop releases a few years later than the 3DS. Obviously, this is because the Wii U was released later. One thing we should compare are the release dates shown for Wii U VC - if every game was released on the same day, then no work was involved in the 'release' - the Wii U just had access to the eShop library all at the same time. -- 16:51, 5 March 2015 (UTC)

:::On second thought, it may be best to do away with the Nintendo eShop category (however, we should have some description of it, right? Or maybe just WP: link it to the Wikipedia article?). Nintendo may never unify their home console with their portable. I figure that their strategy is to keep the two markets separate so that mobile gamers have an incentive to keep buying new consoles. If they put the mobile games on the Wii U, they may be less inclined to buy the mobile console. I mean, at this point it sounds like a dumb strategy to me. What I would do is make the next mobile console the controller for the Wii 3, since the tablet they included has great functionality but would be even better if you could take it on the road (and not have battery problems). Unified platforms are what I'm looking forward to. I might actually buy a modern console then. It will also keep the game industry alive, since high end PCs are superior to consoles and services like Steam are making console unnecessary - until Windows/Mac OS adds remote tablet functionality (unlikely). -- 17:09, 5 March 2015 (UTC)

Inclusion of arcade cabinet 'multi-carts'
The problem with these missions is that they really can't be described anymore with text + picture, while these games have predictable pacing as what I mentioned in its Walkthrough page, this is a roadblock that I feel like its unnecessary to break through

Hi Proc, just found out about cabinets that were collections of games from other platforms but not exclusive to arcades, e.g. wp:PlayChoice-10. Can we add these under the same criteria as multi-carts and compilations? -- 05:28, 9 March 2015 (UTC)
Explaining these missions "down to the bone" as in referring to where would enemies come in, come out, and all that, just feels like unnecessary information and nobody would basically read it, a good example of a game just like this is Sky Force Reloaded, a game I have also nearly mastered a few months ago, I even have my runs in this game uploaded in my YouTube account and I can provide a sample, and just like these 2 games, Sky Force Reloaded also has the same kind of level, basically real time, it has predictable pacing but the levels are way too complex to be torn apart into text + picture form, if you want to recognize the levels of this game you would rather want to just do a trial and error, train your mind memory and muscle memory until you recognize where will enemies appear since enemy positions and appearances don't change, only drops do.
:Hey Notmyhandle, sorry, the thoughts that follow are kind of jumbled because this is a weird topic.  The way I see these kinds of cabinets is more like :Category:MAME, in that the games primarily belong to one category, but can also be subcategorized under another.  Take PlayChoice-10 (PC10) specifically.  Some NES cartridges were converted and made available for play on PC10, but only a small percentage.  (In fact, the very first time I played Super Mario Bros. 3 was on a PC10, I was so excited to find it on one I nearly peed my pants...)  Compare PC10 to Nintendo's VS system; Vs. Super Mario Bros. is specifically an arcade game, not an NES game.  Whereas Super Mario Bros. was made available for play on PC10.  So SMB could receive the category of "PlayChoice-10" in addition to "NES", but not, I would argue, "Arcade".  (PC10 itself could have the NES and Arcade categories.)  So if a game was published in PC10 format (or Mega-Tech or wp:Nintendo Super System) it certainly deserves to have a category indicating that, but those systems themselves are not necessarily multi-carts or compilations.  The games which appeared in each PC10 was up to the individual owner's discretion, much like the Neo-Geo MVS cabinets.  See what I mean?  <span style="color:red">Pro</span><span style="color:grey">cyon</span> 13:59, 9 March 2015 (UTC)
::Ok so you're saying Vs. Duck Hunt may have unique features to Duck Hunt (this is the page that brought up the PC10), although at this point I have no evidence, or content, that we should split it from Duck Hunt. -- 14:55, 9 March 2015 (UTC)
:::Yeah, I haven't heavily explored the difference between Duck Hunt and Vs. Duck Hunt, but what little investigation I've done suggests that the changes are mostly cosmetic, so I would definitely keep them together.<span style="color:red">Pro</span><span style="color:grey">cyon</span> 15:24, 9 March 2015 (UTC)
::You're also saying that the PC10 is actually a 'console' with NES games published to it. With that in mind, then I am ok with using a system category for the PC10. Thanks! -- 14:55, 9 March 2015 (UTC)
:::Kind of, the PC10 was basically a 'console' (NES) stuffed inside an arcade cabinet.  The typical indication of this is when your money buys time instead of lives or a single run of a game.  The ROMs weren't programmed with the notion of credits, or ceasing to read player input when one game was over.  So the manufacturer limits the time you get to play since the game would otherwise allow the player to play indefinitely, as if they were playing at home.
:::Just to hammer the point home, Vs. Duck Hunt lets you play for as long as you can, and ends when the game is officially over, while Duck Hunt on the PC10 let you play as many games as you could within the allotted time, and ended the game as soon as the time was over, regardless of how well you were doing (although I believe they gave you ten seconds to insert more coins for more time... something like that).  All this talk about PC10 is making me think of doing something I shouldn't do... <span style="color:red">Pro</span><span style="color:grey">cyon</span> 15:24, 9 March 2015 (UTC)
::::Aha, thanks for the details. I would love to see a picture of the cartridges that fit into the board, although they are probably just unlabeled circuit boards? Although that would be an awesome buy, I don't think wasting your money on collectors items is beneficial to StrategyWiki or your gaming habits. I'm sure you already have a MAME cabinet - why not set up an emulator cabinet? -- 23:54, 9 March 2015 (UTC)
:::::Lol, to be honest with you, I have more devices for emulation than I know what to do with.  My MAME PC does emulate other systems besides arcades, but these days, that's the one I use the least.  My laptop is fully loaded, I have two Android phones (one is the Xperia Play) and three Android tablets (two with integrated physical controls) that are completely hooked up, I have the Nexus Player partially set up, and both my Wii and Wii U are soft modded to run emulators... so... it's kind of ridiculous.  Btw, playchoice.riemen.net is a great resource for info about PC10 games (including photos of the PCBs) and VS System games. == Pokemon Mystery Dungeon shared guide naming ==
I have been thinking just now that what if the guides for Astrobatics and Alien Sky are already Stage 3 eligible at this point? I will still have to improve them but I believe once I did, they should be at least Stage 3 eligible, but I am afraid that some people may attempt to dispute its ranking and say that it may miss an information, which is also a big problem on my part because I cannot look for someone who has played these 2 games, finished it completely, and then decide to pay my guide a visit and judge it

Hi Proc, we have a doozy of a naming conflict here: Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Keep Going! Blazing Adventure Squad, Let's Go! Stormy Adventure Squad, and Go For It! Light Adventure Squad (the current page doesn't even use the correct, full title of the first game). I am thinking that the common name here, unused in the other games, is the 'Adventure Squad' part, so I was thinking of naming it Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Adventure Squad. Then we can redirect the individual game names and forget about this crazy mish mash of names. What do you think? -- 23:08, 11 March 2015 (UTC)
Assuming that you gave me a go signal to make these guides Stage 3 eligible, I will take that into mind and once I have finally provided 2 more major overhauls I will upgrade it to Stage 3, then, if I was able to find someone who can read these guides and tell me how it is, if it came out as having a really good review saying that it is comprehensive enough, then I will upgrade it to Stage 4 but this is a process that I won't be able to do in just days unless if I am lucky enough to find one quick.
:I named it like this to match the other games, where we have the main title, and then all the subtitles. I think they're missing '!', but are the names incomplete some other way? -- Prod (talk) 01:18, 12 March 2015 (UTC)
::Ugh, this one gives me a headache.  So according to wp:Pokémon_Mystery_Dungeon, these games were never released outside of Japan, which means the names we provided are unofficial approximations.  Interestingly, wp:List_of_Mystery_Dungeon_video_games provides the untranslated names.  Even so, I would almost prefer to group them under Pokemon Mystery Dungeon (WiiWare) with the appropriate redirects (Confirmed Japanese names and approximate English translations).  No matter which way we choose, I don't think the existing article name is functional.  <span style="color:red">Pro</span><span style="color:grey">cyon</span> 14:12, 12 March 2015 (UTC)
:::If those aren't the official names of the games, we should change it and follow our Japanese naming conventions, but I don't think it's going to make the ridiculous page title much easier :P -- Prod (talk) 23:50, 12 March 2015 (UTC)
::::I went ahead with Procyon's suggested simplification since my idea did not get support. Redirects are in place, looks fine. -- 23:48, 6 April 2015 (UTC)

Loosely related Pac-Man titles
I am really sorry for the inconvenience Procyon, I have mentioned you on Discord about this but it seems that you are already not active in there, thank you. Stormshadow429 (talk) 07:24, 7 February 2022 (UTC)

I am looking at Puckman Pockimon and Hyper Pac-Man. These two games are non-canonical spin-offs or clones from other companies than Namco. I would prefer to have information about them on the Pac-Man category, but not have the pages categorized with them (since they are not part of the series), and with a 'Loosely related' section of Pac-Man. Thoughts? I feel like, yes these are solo-games, but since they are basically Pac-Man games, information about them should be somewhere and they could be categorized under the Pac-Man series if we explain why. -- 17:02, 23 March 2015 (UTC)
Thanks for the heads up
:I dunno, crossing this line feels like, if you start to include games like that, where do you draw the line?  Do Mouse Trap, Lock'n'Chase, and other games like K.C. Munchkin belong in that list?  I'd rather see all of those game categorized in its own type of category like :Category:Maze.  Then we can illustrate the fact that they have similar gameplay, without polluting the essence of what officially belongs in the Pac-Man category.  You know what I mean?  Solve one problem while avoiding another.  <span style="color:red">Pro</span><span style="color:grey">cyon</span> 19:29, 23 March 2015 (UTC)
::As the original creator of the two guides mentioned above, I should add my thoughts; they could be mentioned in an "Unofficial sequels" section of the Pac-Man series category and template (along with Pac-Man's Revenge and Twinkle), but Lady Bug, Lock'n'Chase, Mouse Trap, and K.C. Munchkin do not belong in that list given that they only feature gameplay that is similar to that of the Pac-Man series, not its characters. Also, thank you for reverting today's Pinky-gender-change edit (something I hate) on the original Pac-Man's Getting Started page. Namcorules (talk) 16:30, 24 March 2015 (UTC)
:I feel this is like categorizing LoL as :Category:DotA. I think maybe mentioning the "spinoff" games on the category should be fine, and linking to pacman from those games makes a lot of sense.  But, definitely not categorization. Perhaps a new category could be created (similar to MOBA), but I don't think it's necessary. -- Prod (talk) 21:36, 24 March 2015 (UTC)

Hey. Just wanted to say thank you for all the work you did on the Mighty Bomb Jack page. I recently discovered it while trying to make a full game map. All I came for was the images of all the rooms so I could layer them together in a GIMP project... but then I noticed that crazy shortcut from 5 to 11! Turns out it saves time in speedruns compared to warping between the Palace Rooms. It helped me recently get World Record!

I was hoping you could tell me where you found that trick. Seems crazy to think someone could discover it by accident. Did you do a code disassembly or was it in some sort of Nintendo Power or old school strategy guide? Hey....sorry about the callousness for my last message. I felt very frustrated and irritant at the time, so forgive the snarky-ness inherent in the message. I thank you for taking the time to respond to my queries, and I truly respect and appreciate everything you guys do here on this wiki (despite what my desires for it were). I hope we can part (and possibly meet again if I come back) on good terms. All my thanks, GamingBound (talk) 19:54, 7 March 2024 (UTC)

Sourcing[edit]

I'm looking to convert a lot of screenshots and you're responsible for a lot of em. Do you remember if you captured any of the screenshots below? If not, remember where they came from? I would share more, but can only generate 500 at a time!

Much thanks! Trig - 06:20, 19 January 2022 (UTC)

Hi Trig Jegman (talk · contribs). Procyon 03:01, 21 January 2022 (UTC)
Maybe to put this another way, are there any significant examples you can think of where you didn't self capture them? Trig - 04:17, 21 January 2022 (UTC)

Thanks for the Thanks[edit]

Hey Procyon,

I need some guidance[edit]

Here are some samples of it: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IRzhucERGqE https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L7X_VzuQG14

The problem with these missions is that they really can't be described anymore with text + picture, while these games have predictable pacing as what I mentioned in its Walkthrough page, this is a roadblock that I feel like its unnecessary to break through

I am really sorry for the inconvenience Procyon, I have mentioned you on Discord about this but it seems that you are already not active in there, thank you. Stormshadow429 (talk) 07:24, 7 February 2022 (UTC)

Thanks for the heads up[edit]

Yo, I just wanted to say thanks for the heads up on wip. I'll use it when in the middle of major edits from now on. Pakuchi -- Someone! Anyone! Respond! 13:14, 12 May 2022 (UTC)

Make Betterer[edit]

Couldn't Castle Excellent/Walkthrough use template:scrolling map for its page now? Having that giant sprite doesn't seem like it is very helpful. Trig - 21:12, 26 June 2022 (UTC)

Thanks for bringing that to my attention, I didn't realize that the file name was repurposed. I went ahead and fixed it without the scrolling map part. Not sure scrolling map would be very effective there, especially considering it's in a spoiler collapse. Could be a good idea, I'm not sure. Procyon 00:51, 27 June 2022 (UTC)
Regardless, better have a usable map than a not-usable map. Thanks for the change. Trig - 02:12, 28 June 2022 (UTC)

Question[edit]

Hi i was wondering, would you prefer when writing an article (e.g. enemies guide), if i had to make a quick change and I didn’t have the time to go through an entire thing at once, would you prefer me to initially either list them as headers that are empty underneath or list them in dots points (in case) and then expand on them when i have the chance? Thank you Sclera1 (talk) 06:28, 9 July 2022 (UTC)

Kikai[edit]

Couldn't see what the page contained but I found some things that *might* have been the game?

Maybe this helps find if this was a legitimate game or not. Worst to worst, maybe we don't have one of these games and it can be added instead. Trig - 02:24, 22 August 2022 (UTC)

I appreciate you digging in to see if there was any real world examples of a game named Kikai. None of these seem to relate to the content that the user added, so it's difficult to determine whether the user's content was based on a real game in development, or more of a fantasy wish-list game. I'm not going to worry much about it though. Procyon 17:45, 23 August 2022 (UTC)
