Assassin's Creed is an award-winning video game series. The entire franchise is developed by Ubisoft Montreal and published by Ubisoft, with the exception of Altaïr's Chronicles, which was developed by Gameloft. Games have made appearances on the iPhone, Microsoft Windows, Nintendo DS, PlayStation 3, PlayStation Portable and Xbox 360 platforms. The gameplay, while slightly varying from game to game, consists of a mixture of action and adventure, with a heavy emphasis on stealth. All products to date have gained some form of controversy for their adult nature and violent themes.

The plotlines follow a former assassin trainee named Desmond Miles (although he does not make any appearance in Altaïr's Chronicles) as he is captured by megacorporation Abstergo Industries. Desmond is forced to relive his ancestors memories, who were all assassins, in order to recover a "Piece of Eden" for Abstergo. While the Assassin ancestor of Desmond is usually Altaïr, a few of the games feature a similar assassin named Ezio. Assassination targets are almost all derived from real-life historical figures, although the timelines for their lives and causes of death have been changed to suit the games' plot.

It is implied that the 2012 of the game's timeline is rife with chaos and destruction, with Abstergo news letters (which can be retrieved on the game's computers) reporting of a plague that has wiped out the population of Africa, a story about the Mexican President increasing border security in response to "American Refugees" crossing the border, an extreme amount of Hurricanes across the world, and the closing of the film industry in an unnamed country.
