Descent is a series of shooters known for its full freedom of movement in all three dimensions. The source code for the first two games in the series has been freely available since the late 1990s.
After Descent II, Parallax Software split in two: Outrage Entertainment (developers of Descent 3) and Volition (developers of FreeSpace).

FreeSpace is a series of space combat flight sims originally set as a spin-off of the Descent series. The second game in the series no longer carried the Descent name.
In 2002, Volition released the source code for the engine used to create FreeSpace 2. This resulted in the creation of the FreeSpace 2 Source Code Project, an effort by fans working with the code to prevent fragmentation of the source base, and focus efforts on improving the code and adding features to the game.
Descent 4 has been in and out of development several times in the decade since the release of Descent 3. Currently it is believed that Interplay is considering bringing the series back, due to recent changes to their website and announcements that they would focus on exploiting some of their existing IP, including Descent.
