In much the same way as new weapons can increase a party member's Attack, Armor will improve their Defence against both physical and Magic attacks. Unlike weapons, however, armor isn't restricted to a single person - several or all of your party members can wear the same piece of armor, although the effects can be different depending on what's already equipped.
Armor is equipped by pressing 
to open the menu, selecting the character, choosing "Equipment" from the submenu and clicking on the second equipment slot. A list of the available Armor for that character will appear, as well as a description of the piece and its effects on the selected party member.
