Playing Sonic the Hedgehog is relatively simple. This is a short walkthrough on how the game mechanics work.

The Object of the Game

The object of the game is to speed through six Zones, with 2 Acts each. Each Act has a variety of enemies and challenges that must be conqured in order to continue. Within the Acts, Sonic must collect rings in order to keep himself protected from enemy attacks. Collecting rings is also mandatory to go to the special stage, where one of the six Chaos Emeralds can be obtained. In order to complete the game 100%, you must collect all six Chaos Emeralds and defeat Dr. Robotnik in the Final Zone.

Useful Items

Within each act, Sonic can obtain itmes to help him through the adventure. These items are typically found in Computer Monitors, with the exception of rings, which will not always be found in item boxes. Each item will be described further here:

Ring: Collect these to protect Sonic from enemy attacks. If Sonic has at least 1 ring while attacked, he will lose all rings in possesion. The rings can be collected again in a short amount of time after Sonic is hit. Collecting 100 rings gives Sonic an extra life. Collecting 50 rings while passing the goal post will allow Sonic to enter the Special Stage.

The items are only found in item boxes:

Super Ring: Provides 10 rings to Sonic.

Shield: Protects Sonic when hit. You'll lose the shield after Sonic is hit. This does not apply to being crushed or falling in a hole.

Invinceablity: Protects Sonic from all enemy attacks for a short period of time. This does not apply to being crushed or falling in a hole.

Extra Life: Provides Sonic with an extra life. When Sonic loses all of his lives, the game is over (unless you have obtained a continue).

To get the items in an item box, Sonic must jump on the monitor to destroy it.

Speed Sneakers: These will give Sonic a short burst of speed, but will not protect Sonic from enemies.
