Super Mario Advance 3 is the third game in a series of four to bring classic Super Mario titles to the portable Game Boy Advance. This volume contains a Super Nintendo title that was launched late in its life time, Yoshi's Island, the sequel (or prequel really) to Super Mario World. It also contains new features including six brand new levels, and the battle mode homage to the original Mario Bros. game (which was included in every single version of Super Mario Advance).

One of the several changes in the GBA version was that there were six new levels (known as the secret levels). These levels were unlocked after defeating Baby Bowser (and were shown at the left of the extra levels). Another change in this version was pausing an incomplete level. Instead of one pause menu, there were two. The first pause menu gives you 3 options (that being, CONTINUE, SLEEP, and CANCEL) or 4 (which adds BACK TO MAP for a complete level). The second one is an updated and redesigned version of the original pause screen (from the original version). It allows a use for items and displays the current score for the player. And another change was the alternate ending. The alternate ending would be accessed if the player gets a 100% for all 60 levels. At the end of the game, the game congratulates the player and tells them the number of deaths they had prior to the 100% completion. (That is, which the phrase says, "You are the XTH Yoshi to adventure on Yoshi's Island!".)
