Overview[edit]

Ness is a psychic powered kid from Earthbound. In his series, he has to save his whole planet from the invading aliens using the Eight Melodies. In SSBU, he carries over most of the attacks his friends used in the original game (actually, in his game, his final smash was actually just a normal attack used by his friend, Poo. Yes, his friend's name was Poo. I am NOT joking). He has numerous ranged combos and strategies in SSBU.

Moveset[edit]

Name Damage Description
Neutral attack 2% Two punches followed by a kick
1.4%
3%
Forward tilt 10% A high-KO potential kick. Surprisingly, no matter what angle it is at, it does the same amount of damage.
Up tilt PK Toss 9% Jumps up and creates a large amount of PSI sparks. Does good damage.
Down tilt 5% A swift shin kick. Useful knockback tool.
Dash attack PK Hand Stamp 7% A slide forward where Ness creates 3 PSI sparks that knocks opponents back.
Forward smash Batter Up! 18% Swings his baseball bat. Can reflect projectiles.
Up smash Around the World 13% Sends his yoyo in an "Around the World" trick. Great for ending juggling combos and for other combos
Down smash Walk the Dog 10% Does a "Walk the Dog"
Neutral aerial Ness Spin 11% Spins diagonally in the air, creating PSI sparks around him.
Forward aerial Aerial PK Hand Stamp 7% Same as his dash attack, except in mid-air.
Back aerial PK Drop Kick 15% A drop kick that produces PSI sparks.
Up aerial PK Wiper 5% Waves his hand above him and creates PK sparks.
Down aerial PK Meteor 14% Twirls around and meteor kicks downward.
Grab Just a normal grab.
Pummel 3% Attacks with PK sparks
Forward throw 11% Throws the opponent with PK power
Back throw 11% Throws the opponent backwards with PK power. Can be followed up with PK Thunder to juggle.
Up throw 12% Throws the opponent upwards with PK power. Can be followed up with PK Thunder to juggle.
Down throw 5% Slams the enemy downward and uses PK Fire.
Floor attack 7% Sweep kicks in front of him.
Edge attack 5% Flips and sweep kicks.
Neutral special PK Flash 11%-27% A ball of PSI appears over Ness and explodes. If charged, it will sweep overhead and explode. Unlike Lucas, you can't aim PK Flash
Side special PK Fire 6% Shoots a bolt of PSI magic at the opponent. Spams damage over and over through a ball of fire that is created through the attack.
Up special PK Thunder 11% (PK Thunder) 27% (PK Thunder 2) Shoots a ball of lightning out of Ness's head. Can be steered. If it hits Ness, he will be launched in the direction of the attack. This is called PK Thunder 2.
Down special PSI Magnet 4% per hit Creates a shield of PSI power that absorbs ranged attacks (and some melee attacks, depending on the attack).
Final Smash PK Starstorm 8% per hit Makes huge meteors fall from the sky. Can be controlled with left-right inputs.

Strategies[edit]

Ness has multiple ranged strategies and combos (the latter option uses PK Thunder in a lot of them) and a few good smash attacks.

The "Earthbound Combo"[edit]

This is a simple combo that requires you to be able to spam attacks. First, hit the opponent with a forward tilt, then follow up by spamming PK Fire , then using PK Flash, and then end with a forward smash. This combo deals a large amount of damage due to the fact that PK Fire does good damage over time and forward smash launches opponents pretty far. This can be used on an opponent who has already been dealt a large amount of damage, as the forward smash will most likely finish them off.

PK Fire[edit]

PK Fire does quite a bit of damage over time, and can be pretty useful in all gamemodes (using it in Home-Run Contest 7 times and then using the bat will most likely cause the sandbag to go 400-500 km at most) and is useful for edgeguarding, as the fire created by it will travel downwards in mid-air.

PK Thunder[edit]

PK Thunder is one of the best attacks in the game. It can be used as a dash attack (if you hit yourself with it), a great recovery option (launch yourself with it) or a great finisher. It's one of the most versatile moves in the game and has many different uses. Here is a list of them:

  • Use it for launching
  • Can be used as a recovery move
  • Can be used as a dash attack
  • Can be used on an opponent in mid-air to launch them over the top blast line
  • Can be used in mid-air on your head to turn you into a human meteor. Very useful for edgeguarding

Point is, PK Thunder can be used as a number of things I named and quite a few that I haven't.

Inferno Combo[edit]

This is a combo involving Ness's smash attacks and his PK Fire. First, start by stunning them with PK Thunder, then use PK Fire on them to rack up damage. From there, you can end the combo in two different ways. If they are on the edge, use a down throw (which is where he tosses the enemy downward and uses PK Fire on them. This is kinda where I got the name) and follow up by hitting them with PK Thunder when they try to recover. The other option is to finish them with PK Flash and then use the forward smash. This will most likely work because the opponent will have been dealt a large amount of damage from the PK Fire.

Differences Between Ness and Lucas[edit]

Ness[edit]

  • has higher speed
  • does more damage with PK Thunder and PK Fire
  • uses a yoyo
  • has more control over PK Starstorm
  • less mobility with PK Thunder

Lucas[edit]

  • has ranged grab
  • has stronger throws
  • has more mobility and control with PK Thunder and other moves
  • has less control over PK Starstorm
