The 8-bit programmers made big efforts to make their sprites look three-dimensional, while your modification, IMHO, makes them look absolutely flat. For example, a 2D-sword may seem thin and sharp, but I think your modification makes it look like a thick wooden slab, much less realistic. Vice versa, a 2D-brick may suggest to be cubic and the 2D-head of a chracter may look spherical, but your modification makes them look flat.
