1943: The Battle of Midway features a variety of pick-ups and weapon upgrades. Each weapon upgrade is temporary (20 seconds usage), but it can be extended by picking up either a different weapon or an icon of the same weapon type. Weapon usage time limit maxes out at 64 seconds. Some weapons can be upgraded for increased firepower.

Red Fighter items[edit]

To collect an item, you must first shoot down an entire set of red jet fighters. If you eliminate the entire group, it will leave behind an item. Sometimes that item is predetermined and fixed, and shooting it will have no effect. But most of the time, it is a variable item which you must shoot to change it's appearance. The order in which the items change is as follows:

POW Shotgun

The POW icon appears first, and between every weapon that you can collect. Grab it to restore 8 units of fuel to your energy meter.
1943 item sprite Shotgun.gif
A short-ranged weapon that fires a powerful spreading blast of anti-aircraft buckshot. More of a defensive weapon, it doesn't have a lot of power, but it is notable for it's ability to destroy enemy projectiles. Initially, it has poor reach and slow rate of fire, but it can be upgraded for improved range and speed by collecting the Shot Gun icon twice in a row.
3-Way Auto
1943 item sprite 3-Way.gif
Allows the player's fighter to fire a three-way spreading shot that is useful for shooting down multiple enemies at a time. It's also a practical tool for revealing the location of invisible items. However, there is no upgraded effect when you are joined by side fighters.
1943 item sprite Auto.gif
Rapid-fire, large-caliber machine guns. Easy to use and are more powerful than the standard guns. Eights shots are fired when the fire button is held down. After that, it must be released and pressed again to continue firing.
Shell Energy Tank
1943 item sprite Shell.gif
Fires high-damaging shells in a straight line with no spread. Powerful, but must be aimed to be useful. A wider spread can be achieved with the Side Fighters power-up. Shells will fire continuously as long as the fire button is held down.
1943 item sprite Fuel.gif
If an item icon is shot enough times, you will eventually get an energy tank. Collecting an energy tank restores 24 units of energy, three times as much as a POW. However, you must loop through every weapon three times before it reveals itself. Once present, shooting it will not cause it to change into anything else.

Other items[edit]

Side Fighters Maneki Neko
1943 item sprite Side.gif
Equips the plane with two drones that add to the amount of projectiles with certain weapon upgrades (particularly the Auto, Shell, and Laser power-ups), making for extra firepower. However, they can be destroyed by enemy fire in a few hits.
1943 item sprite Cat.gif
A powerful weapon, it allows the player's plane to fire high-powered, piercing laser blasts. It can be obtained by collecting the hard-to-catch maneki-neko (beckoning cat) icon.
Yashichi Star
1943 item sprite Yashichi.png
Collecting a Yashichi will completely restore all of the Super Ace's energy meter. Sometimes it is hidden and must be revealed by shooting it's location. Other times they are left behind by enemy fighters under rare circumstances.
1943 item sprite Star.png
Even harder to make appear than the Yashichi, collecting a star will grant you 5,000 bonus points and completely fill up your special weapon timer. You can only find it on certain levels by shooting a particular plane in such a way that makes it spin out and crash.

Bonus Items[edit]

Bamboo shoots Strawberry

You must fly over the right clouds to make these Bamboo shoots appear. You earn 500 points just for making them appear, but you get 2000 points for collecting them.
1943 item sprite Strawberry.png
Collecting a Strawberry is worth 10,000 points. To make them appear, you must typically shoot the highest small battleship that appears just before you drop down to engage in battle with them up close.
Barrel Dragonfly

Barrels are also worth 10,000 points. To make them appear, you must shoot the right hidden locations when you are closer to the water, fighting battleships.
1943 item sprite Dragonfly.png
One of the hardest bonus items to reveal, it is worth 10,000 points if you can collect it. It is said to appear when an enemy battleship becomes visible from an aerial battle, or when the credit number notation is "9".
Cow Mobi-chan

If you are lucky enough to reveal a cow by shooting the right place on the screen, you can collect one for an additional 20,000 bonus points.

When a battleship's destruction is 100%, the bridge explodes and four pieces scatter in the air. If they hit you, your plane will take a lot of damage, but for each piece you destroy you will get 10,000 points. In addition, Mobi-chan from Side Arms Hyper Dyne may escape when the bridge explodes. If you manage to shoot it, you will earn a whopping 100,000 points.
