In addition to the four bosses, there are nine common enemies that will do their best to kill you. Many enemies can be defeated in a single hit with, but some will require multiple hits. Morning Stars and Fireballs will reduce the number of times you need to strike.

Bat[edit]

Bats make their homes in the caves surrounding Castlevania. They roost on the ceilings, but when they sense danger, they drop down and attack whatever has wandered by. Their flight is a little unpredictable, and they may or may not make their way towards Christopher. More often than not, multiple bats will create confusion as you try to pass through their territory.

Big Eye[edit]

These giant eyeballs behave a lot like giant rolling boulders. However, they have a nasty little surprise. When you strike them, they explode with a bit of force. It's enough to destroy weak ground below them, like bridges. Sometimes it's wiser to jump over them than to strike them.

Creeper[edit]

Creeper are small creatures who wander the forests around Castlevania. Although they are small, they are hardy. One strike from a Leather Whip is not enough to stop it. It will send them flying back before they launch themselves into the air and leap at Christopher. However, one hit from a Morning Star is enough to silence them for good.

Eagle[edit]

Defending their nests among the branches, Eagles are vicious birds of prey who seek to make Christopher regret his visit to the forest. They fly a bit above Christopher's head before reaching the opposite side of the screen, and diving down in the opposite direction to strike him from behind. Be ready to attack when they make their approach.

Evil Armor[edit]

The armored statues the line the entrance to Dracula's halls are more than meets the eye. Several of them are enchanted and come to life either shortly before Christopher approaches them, or shortly after he has passed. Being made of metal, they take two attacks to strike down. Until you remove them, they advance relentlessly, spear in hand.

Mud Men[edit]

Mud Men are the first enemy you will encounter as your adventure begins. They fall from the sky as unformed blobs of mud. They hit the ground with a plop and then rise up before advancing towards Christopher in an effort to attack him. Strike them down with one hit to eliminate them. You can even hit them as they fall to the ground.

Night Stalker[edit]

Night Stalkers are a formidable enemy. Their weapon of choice are boomerang-like hooks. They will toss them out, only to have them return back to them. If they toss them high, they return low, but they can also crouch down and toss them low, which results in them returning high. They are quite slow and fairly easy to hit, but they require 5 strikes from the Leather Whip to remove.

Spitter[edit]

Despite being immobile, Spitters present a significant threat to Christopher. They remain in place, either upright on the floor or hanging upside down from the ceiling, and open their mouth to spit out large fireballs which ricochet around the environment at diagonal angles. The fireballs can be destroyed with your whip. Spitters themselves require four hits to remove.

Worm[edit]

Worms occupy the ledges on the dangerous path which leads to Castlevania. As Christopher tries to avoid the spikes which continuously advance on him, these large worms are present to slow him down. While they are easily dispatched with a Morning Star, the Leather Whip isn't quite enough to remove them. Hitting them with the whip causes them to curl up into a ball and quickly roll along the ground. Be prepared to strike them again before they bowl you over.
