The SaGa series, created by Akitoshi Kawazu, is a franchise of science-fantasy role-playing video games developed by Square Enix, previously Squaresoft before the merger with Enix. The games are acclaimed for their intricate mechanics, non-linear progression systems, and branching character storylines.
The series' first entry, Makai Tōshi SaGa, released in Japan for the Game Boy in 1989. In the west, it was renamed to The Final Fantasy Legend to improve marketing by linking it with the Final Fantasy franchise. This would be the case for the two following entries, SaGa 2: Hihō Densetsu and Jikū no Hasha SaGa 3 [Kanketsu Hen], which were renamed to Final Fantasy Legend II and Final Fantasy Legend III overseas respectively. Makai Tōshi SaGa became Square's first game to sell one million units, and it was later remade for the WonderSwan Color. SaGa 2 and SaGa 3 were also remade for the Nintendo DS with the subtitles Goddess of Destiny and Shadow or Light, but remained Japan-exclusive. These three games comprise the original "Sa・Ga" trilogy, and are featured in the Collection of SaGa: Final Fantasy Legend compilation.
The "Romancing SaGa" trilogy, released for the Super Famicom, consists of Romancing SaGa, Romancing SaGa 2, and Romancing SaGa 3. These games introduce a number of series staples such as the Free Scenario System, Glimmers, and Tomomi Kobayashi as a recurring character artist. However, they did not see western releases until Minstrel Song, a remake of the first Romancing SaGa, was released for the PlayStation 2. Subsequently, remastered and officially localized versions of both Romancing SaGa 2 and 3 were released. Romancing SaGa 2 was later completely remade in 3D under the subtitle Revenge of the Seven.
The "SaGa Frontier" duology, released for the Sony PlayStation, consists of SaGa Frontier and SaGa Frontier 2. They are notably the first games in the series to be released in the west under the "SaGa" name rather than Final Fantasy. SaGa Frontier received a remaster that includes content which was scrapped from the original version, while SaGa Frontier 2's remaster added new events that expand on certain storylines.
Following the divisive release of Unlimited SaGa on the PlayStation 2, the series remained dormant for a decade until the launch of Emperors SaGa, a now-defunct social network game, which was followed by Imperial SaGa on Windows. SaGa Scarlet Grace, released on the PlayStation Vita, was the first mainline entry in 14 years, and saw an overseas release with an enhanced version under the subtitle Ambitions. This was followed by Romancing SaGa Re;univerSe, a free-to-play mobile game set 300 years after Romancing SaGa 3, and a sequel to Imperial SaGa subtitled Eclipse.
As of 2024, the SaGa series has reached over 11 million cumulative sales worldwide. The latest mainline entry, SaGa Emerald Beyond, features refined gameplay mechanics inherited from past instalments, and has the most branching storylines in the series to date.
