The singleplayer campaign of Command & Conquer: Renegade consists of 12 missions, where the player takes on the role of GDI commando Nick "Havoc" Parker, as he is assigned on various missions to take on the Brotherhood of Nod and their elite Black Hand unit.

The campaign can be played on one of three skill levels, which are analogous to easy, medium, and hard difficulties. This setting cannot be changed when a mission is in progress.

  • Recruit: the easy difficulty. Aiming assistance is on and the player is at maximum health. There are plentiful supplies and power-ups, and enemies are weak with few reinforcements.
  • Soldier: the medium difficulty. There is no aiming assistance, though the player still has more health than usual. Supplies are scattered though sufficient, and is a moderate enemy presence.
  • Commando: the hard difficulty. The player is at normal health, but there is a higher number of enemies and they are more bullet-spongy. There is scarce resources.

There are three types of objectives in each mission:

  • Primary objectives are required to progress through the mission. Failing a primary objective will fail the whole mission, and thus will require a restart from a save or the beginning of the mission.
  • Secondary objectives are optional, but completing them adds to the mission score and may make parts of the mission easier to complete. Secondary objectives do not need to done to complete the mission.
  • Bonus or tertiary objectives are hidden objectives that are revealed once they are completed. They may involve blowing up a structure or finding a hidden location. Some bonus objective may gift the player with a power-up or a new weapon, though most do not offer anything and are for completionist runs.
