This is a list of the CyberWELLS found in Cyberspace. To enter a Well, it must have been mentioned already in the plot, and have collected the password. Most of the Wells are actually a puzzle or an arcade challenge. You can't visit all the Wells anytime, as they open according to the plot.

The difficulty of the arcade and the puzzles can be adjusted from the options, but there is also a cheat to pass them.

Virtual Herald[edit]

The Well of the newspaper where Jake (and Catherine) work, it is always visitable. There you can see past covers with Ripper's victims. It is updated with each new murder. The most important thing are the dates which help determine the player the timeframe of the story (important in examining Catherine's EEG in Act III).

Virtual Library[edit]

None

The Library can be visited from the start of the game and has no password. Jake asks the book which Stein borrowed but the list is corrupted. The explanation of the riddle is this: all historical titles have the prefix "HC"; the code "no iaid" refers to the optician terminology for visual acuity, also "20/20 vision", therefore "2020"; the +1 makes it "2021"; finally, all codes end in a letter, and the number 18 means that the letter is "R". Therefore the code is HR2021R. It is revealed that that Stein borrowed a book on Jack the Ripper.

The Library is visited also in Act II when Jake is looking for an Audio Editing software, and the Librarian uploads him "a trial version" for free.

Catherine's Well[edit]

VULCAN

The Well where Wofford was building the virtual Whitechapel. In Act I Jake can visit the Well but the only thing he can see is a 3d schematic of the construction.

It can be visited again in Act III after Wofford's brother gives Jake the AI. Thus Jake can chat with Wofford's mind, who tells him that he needs 3 weapons to defeat the Ripper. He gives the passwords to the weapon wells, the software integrator, and tells you how to use the weapon

Falconetti's Circus[edit]

CIRCUS MAXIMUS

One of Falconetti's Wells, this is where Jake first meets him. Falconetti at first is not friendly and makes Jake pass an arcade trial and dares Jake to beat his high score of 30000. It is a combat obstacle rail shooter where you must shoot the "bad guys" and spare the "good guys". There is no clear way to tell them other than the "good guys" are generally immobile and have a somehow green hew; but not always. Try to play it several times and memorize the sequences. In the harder difficulty settings, you have to hit the bad guys several times for more score.

When you beat it, Falconetti will agree to meet you in his safehouse.

Catherine's Mind[edit]

At the start of Act II, when Falconetti interfaces you with Catherine. At first you have to pass another rail shooter against Bio Logic ICE.

Cheat
CAFFEINE

Jake has to visit Catherine after he has collected some new evidence and tell them to Catherine in order to bring her back. In Act II he must discover that: Burton, Falconetti and Magnotta were all in the Web Runners; Burton and Falconetti were married; Magnotta was in love with Burton and disrupted their wedding; Burton has a secret lab performing some experiments. After this, Catherine will partially recover.

Ιn Act III Catherine can have some conversation. The things that Jake must discover and discuss with Catherine are: how she was attacked; why she didn't share her Ripper investigation with Jake; if the Ripper is still after her; Burton's secret project; in the last Web Runners' Ripper Game somebody was killed; who Josie Dorsett was; how she knows about Farley's death.

With each progress, her assaulter's image on the monitor will take more shape.

Web Runners Well[edit]

ANACHRONY STATION

This Well stores the background of the Web Runner gamers. It is guarded by a spider ICE which blocks access with a puzzle. It is a common sliding puzzle to restructure the image. The missing position is reserved for the upper right of the image, which is totally black. Therefore start from the bottom row and work your way upwards.

Once into the Well, click on the "monitor" to see past photographs of the Web Runners (suspects and victims) and their backgrounds. You may wish to pay attention to the narration and hear them several time, as all information is only given orally, and you can't visit this Well again. However there are no significant plot points or hints there, other than advancing the plot.

Falconetti's Well where he stores some items of personal interest. It is blocked by another puzzle ICE, similar to the sliding block. It is adviseable to form Falconetti's face image in the exterior. Memorize which blocks affect only the exterior onces, complete them and then proceed to the interior of the image.

Cheat
HEADACHE

When at first you visit the Well, you see several Jack the Ripper stuff, such as a cloak, daggers, letters, and Falconetti's journal.

You visit again the Well after Gambit mentions he found a book. The book contains a letter from Jack the Ripper, a collection of Falconetti's daggers, a book catalogue and a diary of his sexual relationships. The catalogue is a puzzle: you have to rearrange the titles according to some notions mentioned in Jack the Ripper's letter. The sequence is this:

  1. The VR-Living Complete Book of Home Repair (I keep hearing the police have caught me but they wont fix me just yet.)
  2. The Open Road: A History of 20th Century Auto Racing (when they look so clever and talk of being on the right track)
  3. Epileptic Reactions to VR Environments (gave me real fits)
  4. The NEO New Age: Tearing Down the Myths (and shant quit ripping them)
  5. Earn Thousands as a VR Data Angel (Grand work the last job was)
  6. The Duchess in the Clock Tower (I gave the lady no time to squeal)
  7. Virtual Fly Fishing, Where There's Always A Hatch To Match (How can they catch me now)
  8. Phoenix: Phact Or Phiction? (and want to start again)
  9. Short Excursions into VR Role Playing (my funny little games)
  10. Topical Agents for the Treatment of Hemhorrhaging (some of the proper red stuff)
  11. Deficit Spending in the Late 20th Century (it went thick like glue and I can't use it)
  12. Van Gogh: A Psychological Study (The next job I do I shall clip the Lady's ears off)
  13. Keep Sharp: A Cutlery Collector's Bible (My knife is nice and sharp)
  14. Rabbi T.S. Foote: A Biography (Good luck = rabbit's foot)

Once you complete this, you will download an audio recording of the last Jack the Ripper gaming session, where Josey Dorsett died.

PEGASUS

This puzzle is a mini-chess game called Ironblood. No rules are given, and they are discovered only through trial and error. You control the "good" side (with elves, knights etc) against the "evil" side (with goblins, barbarians and other monsters).

Cheat
ASPIRIN

Here is an explanation of the rules of the game:

Board[edit]

The board is 7x7 and is divided in several fields: The lower 2x7 bluish field is where you start, and Kings can't move outside this space.

Halfway, there is a line marked with some blocks. This line marks the range of the Bishops. 2 of them are targeted by the opponents Bishops, 2 of them are targeted by your Bishops. If you see an opponent's Pawn being vulnerable on this row, have in mind that he is possibly luring your Pawns to be eaten by one of his Bishops.

Sometimes the oppponent might drive his Pawns outside the board to eliminate them, presumably to upgrade his Bishops.

Pieces[edit]

There are 3 kinds of pieces, which are however upgraded whenever they eliminate an opponent's piece, there are:

  • 1 King: Looks like a King (you) and a Dragon (opponent). He can move only one adjacent square, and can't exit the player's space. The purpose of the game is to eliminate the opponent's king.
  • 3 Pawns: They look like elves/goblins. They can move 1 square in all directions. At first they can eliminate only enemy Pawns, but when they do, or when they reach the far side of the board, they are upgraded to Pawns2 (presumably Pawns2 can attack enemy Bishops).
  • 2 Bishops: They look like Amazons/Executioners. At the start of the game they can't move; they can only attack Pawns that might have stepped on the vulnerable squares of the halfway row. However the enemy is smart enough to avoid those squares, while he can lure you to step on the squares targeted by his Bishops. :When all your 3 Pawns are eliminated, Bishops are upgraded to Bishops2 and have the form of a Knight in your side. This piece can move 1 or 2 squares in all directions.

Strategy[edit]

If you want to make the enemy move first, simply move your King.

A suggested strategy is this: concentrate your Pawns to the right of the board, as the left side of the board is targeted by the enemy's Bishops. The enemy is seldom vulnerable so you won't keep a Pawn2 long enough to use it.

Also, the player who loses all his Pawns, gets Bishops2; so have in mind that while you happily eliminated the enemy Pawns, he just got Bishops2 while you are stuck with a Pawn or Pawn2 at best (your Bishops are still immobilized until you lose it). Use your last Pawn to lure an enemy Bishop2 to a square that will be a target of your future Bishop2; once he eliminates it, you get Bishops2.

Once you get rid of the enemy Bishop(s)2 you are already a winner, so just approach the enemy King and eliminate him.

BERMAN4

Berman had connections with Simian Technologies. The ICE in that Well is a concentration puzzle not with images, but UPC codes. You have to open all three panels with a certain number (3411700863). In the Easy Mode these are: 1st top row, 1rst 3rd row, 3rd last row. You find some signatures (actually belonging to Clare Burton) and in one possible scenario you find that the account is owned by Vigo Haman.

Warp[edit]

WARP

The Well of the company which owned the Jack the Ripper game. There you find a document with the players of the fateful last session years ago, with the gamers who were logged in. In some scenarios, you learn that "Jack Rip" or "Clarence" accessed the source code.

DIGITAL EDEN

The Well of a cyber expert. He will help you finding a sensor program, an anti-viral code, and a compression program, which he gives you himself. After visiting the Isis Well, he redirects you to the anti-viral Well.

Isis Well[edit]

PSY BARD

An Egyptian-themed virtual world. It asks you the name of his "master's father's nephew". The answer is Horus. The only hint the voice gives you is that "vulture is the beginning" which means it's the letter A. Find the vulture on the panel (left column) and count clockwise the letters to find the correspondences.

You can type "HORUS", but even if you don't know the answer, the text on the slab gives a hint: it translates as "SHELTER, NOOSE, MOUTH, QUAIL, FOLDED CLOTH", helping you determine the correct buttons.

After that, you get the sensor program.

Anti-viral Well[edit]

EXTERMINATOR

A jumping puzzle of chance and speed; the harder the level, the quickier the blocks multiply. Just jump forward, left, right, back, as long as you can move towards the skull. It's a good idea to begin moving to the left. Once you reach it, you get the anti-viral code.
