Box art[edit]

Hello. Thank you for your recent upload contributions. When uploading new versions of files, please link to the sources within the file page itself, as that is a required attribution for fair use. Additionally, please do not convert file types (png -> jpg as an example) as it can lead to quality loss, color distortion, and file size bloat. Many of the files may be missing the file template—that is okay. Either add it when linking the source (an example of how it should be used has been corrected on the upload File:SFA boxart.jpg) or just leave a link behind and I can change it myself later.

I would also prefer not taking box art from other wikis, as they are generally not sourced properly and are not the final destination for linking—if MarioWiki moves/deletes their file but the original source still exists, people won't be able to navigate to it. I have a list of resources available on my page Sourcemageddon, or if the wiki lists a source for their box arts, use that instead. Fandom Wikis and GameFAQs uploads are discouraged.

If you have any questions about the above, do not hesitate to ask. Trig - 06:11, 13 February 2024 (UTC)

Thanks. I'll link the files that I've updated here so that they can be corrected.

I would prefer not to upload very large files such as File:Mother_1_and_2_box.jpg. Our primary purpose is to store guides, not to warehouse high quality images. 7MB is rather enormous for an image on our site, and enough of those will quickly ratchet up our hosting requirements. Please try to keep images sizes around 1MB ideally, 2MB at most. Thank you. Procyon 19:02, 15 February 2024 (UTC)

Regarding your question of image scope, one way to consider it is that we only cover stuff that is part of the game. What's on/in the box. Things from third parties would be out of scope. The primary goal of the site is to document how to beat the game, and everything that would be useful to support that. -- Prod (talk) 23:03, 15 February 2024 (UTC)

Magazine covers[edit]

Please refrain from uploading any more magazine covers. They are not in scope for the site, and will likely need to be deleted. Procyon 19:31, 15 February 2024 (UTC)

What the site needs[edit]

What SW genuinely needs is more gaming guide content. That is the primary purpose for which users visit the site: to learn how to complete video games. While we host images in order to dress up the guides, we're not really a database for box covers or anything like that. As you can see, we barely display box images any bigger than 300 pixels wide. They're there to dress up the guide and break up the monotony of text, but the text is the real content that the site values. Most images should enhance guides (a picture is worth 1000 words, etc.) so maps are great, screenshots indicating where secrets can be found, pictures of boss battles, etc. That's what SW really needs because that's why we exist and what we are trying to offer people. People don't really come to this site to learn what the Super Mario Bros. 3 box art looked like, there's plenty of other sites for that, or even a simple Google search can teach you that much. So please, pick your favorite game. If it doesn't have a guide on this site, please start one. If it does, go through it and find any mistakes or omissions and fix them. That's the best help the site could ask for from anyone right now. There are literally thousands of games that we don't have guides for. Please help fill in our gaps. Procyon 23:03, 15 February 2024 (UTC)

As a Nintendo fan, you might enjoy this list here which has most nintendo franchises listed with every game and their level of completion. Trig - 23:08, 15 February 2024 (UTC)
Thank you both. Working on the Pikmin 1 guide now, as well as updating other main game pages. GamingBound (talk) 00:39, 17 February 2024 (UTC)

I'm simply going to ask you to stop uploading box art to the site. Please. It's unnecessary. It's not helping us, and it's just creating more work for the admins. Any close facsimile to what the box art looked like is good enough for this site. The site needs guide content, not box art. We're not an image database. We never have been. Procyon 03:08, 26 February 2024 (UTC)

Fine. I think I'll go to NintendoWiki instead. I just don't think I'm the right fit for this one. Thanks for everything. GamingBound (talk) 15:14, 26 February 2024 (UTC)

File naming[edit]

Please try to include the name of the game at the beginning of filenames, it helps avoid naming conflicts (many games have yellow pikmin for example). You can see more details in the policy. -- Prod (talk) 00:54, 20 February 2024 (UTC)

Please include alt-text when adding images, it helps with accessibility:
[[File:Pikmin Pellet Posies.png|250px|right]] would become
[[File:Pikmin Pellet Posies.png|Pellet Posies|250px|right]]
-- Prod (talk) 02:21, 23 February 2024 (UTC)

Sprite uploads[edit]

Please don't upload 1:1 pixel ratio sprites to the site. They are simply too small for most users to see, either on a monitor or on their phone. We purposely upscale sprites to make them more visible to users of the site. Thank you. Procyon 20:08, 20 February 2024 (UTC)

That was an unfinished edit. Regardless, thank you. GamingBound (talk) 00:45, 21 February 2024 (UTC)
