Valkyria Chronicles, known in Japan as Battlefield Valkyria: Gallian Chronicles (戦場のヴァルキュリア -Gallian Chronicles- Senjō no Varukyuria -Gallian Chronicles-?), is a Japanese turn-based strategy RPG with first and third person perspectives (it can be loosely categorized as a tactical rpg). It was developed by Sega exclusively for the PlayStation 3 and released in Japan on April 24, 2008, Europe on October 31, 2008, and North America on November 11, 2008. The game was later ported to PC and released in North America on November 11, 2014. An enhanced version titled Valkyria Chronicles Remastered was released for the PlayStation 4 in Japan on February 10, 2016, and in North America, Europe, and Australia on May 17, 2016. To go alongside the release of Valkyria Chronicles 4, it was ported to Nintendo Switch, released on September 27, 2018 in Japan, and on October 16, 2018 in North America and Europe.

Story[edit | edit source]

The game is set in the fictional land of Europa in 1930, in the country of Gallia. Because of its abundance of ragnite ore (which can be refined into a powerful fuel) it has come under attack from the East European Imperial Alliance, which itself is engaged in war with the Atlantic Federation. Players take control of an uprising of Gallian nationals, dedicated to repelling the invasion. The game's visuals, which feature Sega's CANVAS graphics engine, have received a lot of attention. With CANVAS, the game's entire graphical style is built to resemble a watercolor painting in motion.
