Cold planer.
Cold planer.

Cold planers, otherwise called pavement millers or asphalt millers, are used to scrape up asphalt for reuse. They are the first step in road reconstruction projects. They are referred to as "cold" planers in contrast to older "warm" planers.

Despite being tracked vehicles, cold planers use wheel controls.

Cold planers produce milled asphalt that is projected out the front-mounted conveyor. This milled asphalt can be collected by a dump truck and then sold for an extremely high price at the gravel plant (7,000 to 10,000). Milled asphalt is not directly reused, and can only be sold.

The cold planer must keep moving forward to mill the asphalt, however, making collecting milled asphalt as a solo player extremely difficult (though not impossible). Milled asphalt can simply not be collected in the case of solo play. Solo players who insist on collecting the asphalt must manually switch between both the dump truck and the cold planer and inch both vehicles forward, collecting the milled asphalt along the way.

Unlike pavers, cold planers can work in reverse, or even width-wise across the road.

Official Description: Cold planers are used in road construction to remove old layers of asphalt. In this process, the removed asphalt is transported via a loading belt, the discharge conveyor. The milled material can be collected by a teammate with a suitable vehicle.
