The game takes place in a different land, the central hub of which being Rogueport. During a stop while traveling, Princess Peach finds a magical map and sends it to Mario, telling him to meet her at Rogueport. Upon his arrival, Mario meets a gang known as the X-Nauts that are attacking a Goomba girl named Goombella. He learns the X-Nauts are searching for relics known as the Crystal Stars, and the map Mario holds apparently leads to them. After taking the map down to the ruins of the old Rogueport and finding the Thousand-Year-Door, Mario is led on a new journey to find the Crystal Stars and to find out what happened to Princess Peach.


The game takes place in the dangerous world of Rogueport where the Princess has found a strange map. She mails it to Mario who sets sail for the country. Almost immediately strange things begin to happen. A young goomba is being attacked by a group of thugs, and Mario steps in to save the day! Of course, Mario and his new friend go to see a professor who investigates the map, and discovers it's connected to a secret door named The Thousand Year Door! Behind the door, however, is a mystery. Soon, Mario will unlock this mystery, which will unlock one thousand years of mystery...
