The edit summary field

The edit summary field is found under the large box that you use for editing. An image of it is to the right. To use this field as intended, simply put a summary of your edit into the text box there, then click one of the three buttons below. Save Page immediately saves the page to the database, giving you no time to check out your edit first. Show Preview allows you to see what the page will look like before actually saving it to the database. This way, you can make any appropriate changes without having to edit multiple times in a row. Show Changes gives you a view of the changes that you've made to the previous version of the page, and is useful to see if you accidentally deleted some content. Generally, we encourage the use of Show Preview to see what your edits look like before you Save Page (see here). You will also find two check boxes: "This is a minor edit" and "Watch this page." Checking "Watch this page" will put a page on your watchlist, which makes it easier to see future edits to it, as you can see it on that page and they are bolded on Recent Changes as well. "This is a minor edit" marks the edit with an m on Recent Changes, and there is an option on that page to "hide minor edits." Finally, the summary itself will show up in Recent Changes, people's watchlists, and your contributions in parenthesis, so it is important to always include one. I feel I should just emphasise the "Preview" button when editing. It's there so that you can check your work before it's set in stone, and we'd appreciate it if you used it a bit more; it's a lot easier for everyone to look at one large, quality edit, rather than lots of little changes to fix mistakes you missed with your first edit to a page.
