This series is noteworthy first of all because it is the best-selling and top award-winning series of French video games.
This series can be split in two: Another World and its sequels Heart of the Alien and Heart of Darkness on one side, and Flashback with its sequel Fade to Black on the other. Still, the two main titles have less in common with their respective sequel than with each other.
Flashback is the spiritual successor of Another World: same development team (the French Delphine Soft. Intl.) and same graphics style. Heart of the Alien is the sequel of Another World, but it's more like a bonus game based on it, and it was developed by a completely unrelated company. Fade to Black is the sequel of Flashback, but it has completely different three-dimensional graphics from the other three games, and therefore different gameplay. Heart of Darkness is another spiritual successor of Another World: it's made by the same author (Éric Chahi) and features similar gameplay, but it has a fantasy setting instead of a science-fictional one.
