There are five race modes (two in China and Global) in Kartrider: Item, Speed, Flag, Grand Prix, and Classic.

Item

In Item mode, you can use various powerups to attack and defend. You get a random item when you hit an item box, but you can only hold two at a time. The chances of getting each item change with your place - for example, it's very rare to get a nitro boost in first place, but relatively common in last place. Some items can only be used in Team mode - for example, the Angel protects everyone on your team, which is useless if you don't have a team.

Strategy and techniques

You can get two items at once if you aim correctly. If you hit a set of item boxes at an angle, (not too much, or you'll be going sideways and probably fall behind from crashing into a wall) you'll be able to hit two, and get two items.

Bananas are best placed around blind turns and in small spaces. They're also good for use in conjunction with a cloud, as opponents won't be able to see them until they pass the cloud. (and possibly hit the banana)

One of the few uses for mirror drifting is in item mode. If you have a rocket and someone's behind you, you can mirror drift, shoot him/her, and mirror drift back.

Speed

There are no items in speed mode. Instead, Speed mode is centered around drifting. You have to drift to get nitro boosts. There's a red N2O bar at the bottom of the screen. When it's full, you get one red nitro boost. As in Item mode, you can only have two at a time. In team mode, there's a second N2O bar - Team N2O. It's blue. When it's full, all the red nitro boosts you and your teammates have turn into blue nitro boosts. Blue nitro boosts last longer. There is a downside, though - you can't use a nitro boost while it's turning into a blue nitro boost. This can be very bad - for example, if your team fills up its Team N2O bar right when you're at the ramp in Pyramid Mesa, you won't be able to use your boost, and therefore won't be able to cross the gap.
