There are several different drifting techniques to use in races.

Basic drift[edit]

This is the most basic type of drift. All the other drift techniques are variations of this technique.

To drift, press shift while turning. An important thing to remember is that just letting go of shift will not end your drift, you have to exit your drift by turning the opposite direction. For example, if you want to drift to the right, use:

 ↑  + + Shift Start drift
 ↑  + Counter drift

Drift boost[edit]

To counter the reduction in speed from drifting, you can use a slight boost after each drift. To do this, just as the drift ends, let go of up, then press it again.

 ↑  + + Shift Start drift
 ↑  + Counter drift
 ↑  Boost

Double boost[edit]

This technique is used to get two drift boosts. To use it, do a normal drift, letting go of up as if you were to drift boost, but not pressing it again. Then drift again, and use both boosts. The tricky part is that you have to do the second boost short enough so that the time to use a drift boost doesn't run out.

 ↑  + + Shift Start first drift
 ↑  + Counter drift
Let go of everything For the first drift boost
+ Shift Start second drift (Important: Don't press up again or you'll use the boost)
↑  + Counter drift and use first boost
↑  Use second boost and continue normal driving

Multiple boost[edit]

A harder version of the double boost, using multiple drift boosts. Start out the same as the drift boost -

 ↑  + + Shift Start second drift
 ↑  + Counter drift
Let go of everything For the first drift boost
+ Shift Start second drift

Repeat the second part as many times as needed.

 ↑  + Counter drift
Let go of everything For the next drift boost
+ Shift Start next drift

End with the last two boosts and exit the drift.

↑  + Counter drift and use boost
↑  Use last boost and continue normal driving

Mirror drift[edit]

A usually useless technique used to turn your kart around while going forward. It can be useful, however, if you accidentally turn around. (in this case, skip the first part) Another use for the mirror drift is in item mode - if you have a rocket and someone's at your tail. Mirror drift, shoot, and mirror drift back.

The first part is to turn around.

 ↑  + + Shift Start normal drift
↓  + (at about 3/4 to 180 degrees) Start going backward
 ↓  Reverse

After turning around, turn back.

 ↓  + + Shift Start drifting back
↑  + (at about 3/4 to 180 degrees) Start going forward
 ↑  Resume normal driving
