There are two types of battles, story and free battle. Story battles advance the main story while free battles are where you can revisit previous areas and level up characters and collect items. Before starting a battle you will have to select characters to add to the party. The party has a max limit of four characters. Once confirmed, the victory and failure conditions are shown. Some battles may have a sub mission condition that rewards an item when completing. You can review the conditions during battle from the menu by pressing . You can press to survey the map and view the status of characters and enemies.
Battles are turn based and the right side of the bottom screen shows the turn order. During each turn, the following commands are available by pressing .
- Item
- Skill
- Attack
- Guard
- Finish
Characters spend AP to perform an action. They start with 0 AP at the start of battle and earn 1 AP at the start of their turn. Normal attacks, using items, and guarding cost 1 AP. Each skill has its own AP cost. Selecting Finish will end the character's turn and not spend AP.
The blue circle around a character shows the area where they can move. Other characters and enemies can block movement if there is not enough space to go around. When attacking, a red area shows where it will hit.
Enemies are divided into groups that move and attack together. Each group has a leader that can summon more members by spending HP. When the leader's HP is low, they will stop summoning. Some battles have generators which will spend HP to summon more leaders. When a leader is defeated, any remaining members of the group will stay and one member will become the leader.
When a weak enemy is hit, they will launch back and knock into other enemies defeating them similar to "bowling." Leaders do not get knocked back, but they still take damage. Each enemy defeated in a turn adds to the combo count and defeating at least 10 will earn an extra turn. Defeated enemies drop crystals and may drop items which are automatically acquired.
