Unlike Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit 2, Need for Speed: Underground incorporates customization. The customization is completely different than Need for Speed: High Stakes. The game allows you to extensively change your car's visual and performance with the exchange of in-game currency. Performance upgrades comes in packages with Level 1, Level 2, and Level 3 upgrades and you also choose which brands you want to supply the parts. You can modify the engine/exhaust, the drivetrain, the tires, the ECU/fuel system, the brakes, and the suspension. You can also add weight reduction, nitrous oxide, and a turbo.

You can also add weight reduction, nitrous oxide, a turbo, side skirts, a spoiler, a roof scoop, a neon, window tint, decals to the windshield, rear window, left and right doors, and left and right rear quarter panels, and up to four vinyls. There is also unique performance and visual upgrades that TJ and Samantha will occasionally give to you in exchange for beating a time trial. You also have a choice of one of two unique wide body kits near the end of Underground mode that replaces the front and rear bumpers and side skirts. Once you purchase a performance or visual upgrade, you do not have to pay for it ever again, even if you uninstall it. If you trade in your car for another one, the performance and visual upgrades from your previous car will automatically be applied.
