Press Garden is the second original zone created for Sonic Mania. It bears the appearance of an ancient ruin, but has been repurposed by Dr. Eggman as a propaganda factory, and thus features elements of a printing press.

Act 1[edit]

While you should take the upper path for the achievement/trophy, if you can avoid the conveyor belts to the left of the lower path, you can easily find a giant ring.

The first trophy/achievement for this zone requires you to find a hidden room filled with crates as Sonic, and destroy those crates using a Fire Shield. To start on the path to this hidden room, run through the stage as normal - you'll have to bounce up a conveyor belt by holding down the jump button and then hit a switch to open a bridge - until you come upon a rotating bridge. Use it to cross to the other side rather than falling off of it; this should leave you on the upper path, but if you still need some Chaos Emeralds, take note of a giant ring to the left of the lower path. When you reach some rotating platforms, climb them and hit the switch to the left of the topmost one. This should open a gate to the right; jump onto the path it opened to come upon an ink pot that produces endless Splats. Right by this ink pot is a switch you can hit that opens up a bridge to the right. Hop on it and proceed forward until you come across some letter blocks, some of which pop out of the wall. Climb these blocks toward a high platform to the left.

Spin Dash up to these conveyor belts to be bounced to higher ground.

Proceed as usual until you come across a steep downward-sloping conveyor belt; across from this, on the wall to the right, is a switch. Be careful not to fall; hit the switch instead to produce some platforms that you can climb. Bounce off the conveyor belt to land on a platform by the wall to the left. This platform will lift you up to another, which you should ride until you see a conveyor belt on the wall to the left. Get a strong bounce on it to reach the platform to the right. Continue forward, past a breakable wall, until you see a slope with some conveyor belts positioned high above it. Spin Dash off the slope to reach them and be bounced up to a Star Post. Proceed past the crusher, allowing the ground to crumble beneath you. Continue down this path to be bounced off of some more conveyor belts until you reach a dead end. Spin Dash up the slope here to some more conveyor belts up above, then run into the spring to the right to be sent down the left path. Bounce up the spring at the end of the path and continue forward, making sure to once again avoid falling off the rotating bridge, as well as the crumbling platforms that follow it.

Use the conveyor belt to bounce to a switch, which will produce some platforms. Climb them up to the left, and then continue climbing, from the rotating platform to the lift, to another rotating platform and another lift. Proceed up to the right, ignoring the next rotating platform, to come upon the Fire Shield. Use it to perform a jumping dash through the crates. After destroying all crates, the achievement/trophy should pop, and you can then use the spring to exit the area. Proceed through the stage as usual to reach the boss, which will cut crates around the area in an attempt to reach you. Avoid its saws and hit its center to defeat it.

Act 2[edit]

The second act gives the zone a change in weather, complete with a snowy backdrop. Ice machines will turn you into a sliding ice cube, which you can break out of by mashing buttons furiously or simply colliding with a wall. While they don't actually do any harm, they can be quite the nuisance, especially when they bring you into contact with enemies and other hazards. A Fire Shield will allow you to avoid the consequences of these machines altogether, and will also cause you to freeze stationary ice cubes on contact. This zone also contains machines that grind up trees; hop off the trees in time to avoid falling into the machine and taking damage. Aside from these two elements, the stage is pretty straightforward.

Jump into the Heavy Shinobi as he jumps to stun him.

The second Hard-Boiled Heavy is fought as the final boss of Press Garden. The Heavy Shinobi is capable of freezing you into an ice cube with a swing of his sword, and can also toss out exploding Asterons like shuriken. You can't attack him directly when he's on the ground, as he will only counter with one of the aforementioned attacks. Instead, wait until he jumps into the air with a Spin Jump similar to your own. Use your Spin Jump to hit the Heavy Shinobi at this moment to stun him, giving you the opportunity to get some more hits in on him while he recovers on the ground. As always, eight hits should do the trick.

After being defeated, the Heavy Shinobi will roll off screen and the barrier to the right of the screen will shatter. Walk on to find the capsule and free the animals within, ending the zone.
