Since MS-DOS was discontinued in 2000, Origin Sys. was disbanded in 2004 and the copyrights of the Ultima series and the Ultima characters belong to two different owners, all of this makes Ultima 5 ''de facto'' abandonware (''remember that'' de facto'' means "in practice or actuality, but not officially established"'').
This version is definitely inferior to the original, and it was a commercial failure. Proof is the fact that it was never released out of the USA. The authors tried to implement graphics reminiscent of Ultima 6, that was already released, but this clashed with the limits of the NES.
