Health Items[edit]

Mystery Quest Star.png
Star: 0 points (1000 points if shot)
Collecting a star will recover a little bit of Hao's health. They usually appear by jumping on tree stumps and pipes.
Mystery Quest Star Smile.png
Star Face: 0 points
Collecting a star with a face on it will recover more of Hao's health than a regualr star. They rarely appear when enemies are defeated.
Mystery Quest Moon.png
Moon: 1000 points
A moon will completely restore Hao's lost health. While they are commonly hidden inside of the walls of castles, it's possible to find a few outside as well.
Mystery Quest Hao Doll.png
Hao Doll: 0 points
A few Hao Dolls are extremely well hidden throughout the game. They will increase the size of Hao's health meter. This can only be done four times, and the effects are lost if you continue.

Use Items[edit]

Mystery Quest Sign Post.png
Sign Post: 200 points
While sign posts only give a few points, if you have to continue, you will start from the position of the last sign post that you collected.
Mystery Quest Key.png
Key: 1000 points
You won't get very far in the castles unless you collect keys. Most are obtained by defeating castle guardians, but some are hidden inside of walls.
Mystery Quest SOS.png
SOS: 1000 points
Normally, if Hao falls in the water, it's game over. However, if you have an SOS, it will save you one time and instantly catapult you out of the water.
Mystery Quest Lamp.png
Lamp: 0 points
Lamps are hidden inside of outdoor walls. If you find and and collect it, you will become invincible for nearly an entire minute. Plow through the enemies.

Power-up Items[edit]

Mystery Quest Roll of Magic.png
Roll of Magic: 10,000 points
In the FDS version, this give Hao his initial ability to use magic, and is found very early. In the NES version, this double's Hao's magical power and gives him the ability to break stronger blocks.
Mystery Quest Magic Stick.png
Magic Stick: 40,000 points
The Magic Stick is only found in the FDS version, and doubles the power of Hao's magic, as well as giving him the ability to break blocks that regular magic can not.
Mystery Quest Crystal of Magic.png
Crystal of Magic: 100,000 points
The Crystal of Magic provides Hao with the ultimate magic power, doubling the strength once again for quadruple the amount of damage of the original magic.
Mystery Quest Faster Boots.png
Faster Boots: 30,000 points
These only exist in the FDS version. They allow Hao to run a little faster after you tap B button. You start the game with this ability in the NES version.
Mystery Quest Power Boots.png
Power Boots: 20,000 points
With the Power Boots equipped, you can break certain parts of the floor by jumping on them. These sections of floor usually have a ceiling fan posted over them.
Mystery Quest Power Helmet.png
Power Helmet: 20,000 points
The Power Helmet is a lot like the Power Boots, except that it allows you to break certain blocks in the ceiling by jumping up to them, instead of on the floor.
Mystery Quest Medicine.png
Medicine (FDS): 30,000 points
The Medicine allows you to use your magic to push blocks of ice (which are also only found in the FDS version).
Mystery Quest Super Mantle.png
Super Mantle: 40,000 points
Reduces Hao's Vitality draining rate by half, effectively making twice as long for his Vitality to drain over time and reducing damage taken by half.
