Two handed weapons deal more damage than one-handed weapons, but are generally slower. While on horseback all weapons are used with only one hand, so two-handed weapons suffer a 25% penalty to speed and damage when used from horseback. You also cannot use a shield despite having a hand free.
Two handed weapons can be swords, axes and maces. They deal impressive levels of melee damage, and are also effective from horseback. While on horseback you swing the sword with only one hand but you are still unable to carry a shield.

The Bastard Sword is a special type of two-handed sword; as indicated in its popup it can be wielded either way. By putting away your shield (scroll the wheel up) you can switch to two-handed, and vice versa. This means you can deal large amounts of damage against melee foes with both hands, but when facing archers you can pull out your shield.
