WCT TG16 select screen.png

The PC Engine and TurboGrafx-16 port of the game has a few modes unavailable to the arcade. In addition to the Singles and Doubles options for one or two players, there is also a Doubles option for four players provided you have four controllers and the Multi-tap accessory. You may also choose to simply watch the computer play against itself in either a Singles or Doubles match.

But the most peculiar option available in the game is the Quest mode. The box on the far right side of the selection screen offers two choices. Select New to start a brand new adventure from the beginning, or select Pass to enter a password that you received from the king to continue your progress from where you left off.

Similarities to traditional RPGs[edit]

Map of the first town.
  • You start out in a kingdom talking to a king who tells you the story of an evil force who has taken over the land, which you must defeat to restore peace.
  • Towns have their own map, and within each town is a set of houses and a shop. Enter the houses to talk to people to get information, and enter the shops to buy new and more powerful equipment.
  • The world is broken up into a square grid with different terrains, some traversable and some not. Walking around the world exposes you to the chance of having random encounters. You can attempt to "run away" from an encounter by skipping a match, but it won't always be successful.
  • Before challenging the final boss of the game, you must locate and defeat six sub bosses.

Differences from traditional RPGs[edit]

Traveling around the world.
  • The evil force spoken of by the king is an Evil Tennis King who is terrorizing the world by preventing everyone from playing tennis.
  • "Battles" in this game are not composed of combat against various monsters, but rather tennis matches against other opponents. Each encounter will consist of a single tennis match.
  • If you win a match, you earn money which can be used towards purchasing better items which enable you to play tennis better. There are no experience points and no levels, so buying better equipment is the only way to improve.
  • If you lose a match, you will be returned all the way to your home town. However, it is possible to warp your way back to another city that you have previously visited in order to reduce the amount of time you need to spend walking around.
