Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney - Justice For All/Episode 2: Reunion, and Turnabout/Part 2-1: Trial

From StrategyWiki, the video game walkthrough and strategy guide wiki

Before Trial

Maya is shocked to hear you are facing Prosecutor von Karma. (his successor) You suddenly see Pearl, who says to have ran all of the way here. (She ran!? Wow!) Maya thinks about Miles Edgeworth for a moment. The man you faced in a couple of cases one year ago. Phoenix tells Maya not to mention that name, because Edgeworth is gone and isn't coming back. (What!? How!?) You head inside the courtroom.

Day Two: Court Mode

You are introduced to your opponent. A very young woman named Franziska von Karma, who says she is here for one thing, revenge (for her father?). Von Karma swears to defeat you and mocks you for your "foolish" plea to make a not guilty verdict. She calls Dick Gumshoe to the stand.

Gumshoe describes the crime with a map:

  • The Channeling Chamber has no windows and the door was locked shut.
  • At the time of the murder, only the victim and the defendant were in the room.
  • They were channeling a spirit.
  • A few minutes after the channeling started,
  • gunshots were heard coming from inside the room.
  • A few of the witnesses broke the door down, and rushed into the room.
  • That's when they found that the victim was already dead.

The Floor Plans will be added to the Court Record. The Judge has Gumshoe testify about how the victim was killed.

Gumshoe's Testimony: Cause of Death

Gumshoe
Gumshoe
Gumshoe's Testimony
- Cause of Death -
  1. The direct cause of death was a pistol shot to the forehead, sir.
  2. The shot was fired from point-blank range.
  3. But before the victim was shot, sir, he was stabbed in the chest.
  4. The wound was very severe, but not enough to cause instantaneous death.
  5. The murderer used the pistol to finish the victim off after the stabbing.

Gumshoe presents the Autopsy Report, which will be added to the Court Record.

Cause of Death: Cross-Examination

Press Gumshoe's 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 5th statements.

1st statement: The pistol belonged to Dr. Grey, but it has Maya's fingerprints all over it.

2nd statement: They could tell the shot was point-blank range, because there were gunpowder burns on his forehead.

3rd statement: The knife belonged to the Feys, and of course Maya's fingerprints were all over it.

5th statement: The shot in the forehead could have killed Dr. Grey instantly, so Dr. Grey would've been stabbed before shot.

The Judge accepts both the Knife and Pistol as murder weapons, they will be added to the Court Record.

Things are looking grim already, everything is implicating Maya for the murder. When given a choice of keeping your plea or make a "justified self defense" plea, choose Plead not guilty, because remember, you have the "key".

Von Karma has Gumshoe testify further about the evidence.

Gumshoe's Testimony: Incriminating Evidence

Gumshoe
Gumshoe
Gumshoe's Testimony
- Incriminating Evidence -
  1. Sorry, pal but there's an even more incriminating piece of evidence.
  2. This is the costume the defendant was wearing at the time of the crime.
  3. As you can see, it's covered in blood.
  4. The defendant attacked and killed a person who, without doubt, was not fighting back.

Maya's Costume will be added to the Court Record. Can you find a contradiction on this state?

Incriminating Evidence: Cross-Examination

Press on Gumshoe's 3rd statement. Lab tests show that it is the victims blood. You ask Gumshoe if there is anything else on the evidence, but von Karma makes an objection. Why did she do that all of the sudden? When given the choice, Press further, then choose There is one little thing.... You examine the costume. Look at the left sleeve. There seems to be a hole there. Present the hole. The Judge takes a look at it and smells gunpowder! It looks like someone tried to shoot her, but missed. Maya's Costume will be updated to the Court Record.

It looks like you found the hole, but von Karma tells the court otherwise, saying the evidence still stands. Unfortunately, The Judge agrees. Darn it you were close.

After updating Maya's Costume, Present it on Gumshoe's 4th statement. The bullet hole on Maya's sleeve indicates Dr. Grey did fought back after all. He probably tried to shoot Maya.

It seems everything is changed, but von Karma states you have made a mistake. What you had just said supports a "justified self defense" plea you refused earlier. Therefore, you have yet to prove anything. Not only that, but the hole on the costume isn't enough to substantiate a "justified self defense" plea! Whoops! Von Karma has Gumshoe testify about what transpired today, with new information.

Gumshoe's Testimony: What Transpired

Gumshoe
Gumshoe
Gumshoe's Testimony
- What Transpired -
  1. During the channeling, the defendant saw her chance to stab the victim in the chest.
  2. Of course, the victim used the last of his strength to fight back, sir.
  3. While the two were fighting, the victim took out his gun.
  4. The victim took a shot, but because they were too close, he missed.
  5. The defendant then picked up on the opening, took the victim's gun and ended it...

What Transpired: Cross-Examination

Press on the 1st statement. It would be extremely difficult for Maya to find a chance. However, von Karma reminds you that Maya was in the middle of channeling. With the nurses build and height, she could have easily been a match.

Press on the 3rd statement. Gumshoe says Grey brought the gun two days prior to the crime, just in case something bad happens. Why would he bring a weapon in the channeling chamber?

Present Maya's Costume on the 4th statement. Take a close look at the bullet hole, where is the gunpowder burn? If the sleeve was shot at point-blank range, there should be gunpowder burn around it! Von Karma tries to explain the victim could have pushed the defendant away before firing. However, the stab wound weakened Dr. Grey greatly, so he wouldn't have the strength to fight back. Von Karma then explains the defendant pushed the victim before the latter fired. When chosen to agree or not, choose Something doesn't make sense.

Von Karma wants Phoenix to show her "hole" on her theory. Present the Folding Screen. There is a hole on it about 8 inches off the ground. If both the defendant's sleeve and the screen were shot at the same time, the defendant could be squatting down. You are asked to present where the defendant was standing. You automatically examine the floor plans. Present the spot just left of the hole is (the south side).

You are asked if your claim changes the case, choose It changes everything. Why would Maya be squatting near the folding screen when she should be preparing to attack?

It looks like you are getting somewhere, but von Karma is still smiling somehow. She accuses Gumshoe for damaging her perfect logic. She wants to call another witness to the stand. Lotta? The Judge calls a recess.

Recess

Pearl congratulates you for listening, making theories, and tricking everyone to believing you. (tricked?) Maya warns you if you don't win, her ghost will haunt you along with Mia.

Court Mode: Part 2

Von Karma calls Lotta Hart to the stand and has her testify about her account.

Lotta's Testimony: Witness' Account

Lotta
Lotta
Lotta's Testimony
- Witness's Account -
  1. Only the Doc and the defendant went into the Channelin' Chamber.
  2. We were waitin' outside the door and then, "bang!" we hear this gunshot!
  3. Mr. Lawyer there broke the door down, and we rushed into the room.
  4. Inside was the dead victim, and the defendant, wavin' a pistol around.
  5. I swear, other than those two, there was no one else in the room.

Lotta presents the picture she took when you two entered. It contains what looks like Maya holding a pistol and Dr. Grey's lifeless body. You don't see Maya's face however. Lotta's Picture will be added to the Court Record. You begin the cross-examination.

Witness' Account: Cross-Examination

Press on all of Lotta's statements. You are given a choice on the 4th and 5th statements. It doesn't matter what you choose on each one.

Things have gotten from bad to worse. You are given a choice to present further. Choose Can't present anything yet as doing so would get you no where.

It looks like all hope seems lost, but you hear a voice. Mia's voice. It looks like Pearl has channeled Mia, yes Pearl! Mia tells you to recall the event when you first entered the crime scene. Yesterday, you told her Lotta took two shots! Why didn't Lotta tell this in her testimony?

You try to stop The Judge from ending cross-examination, but you are overruled. Fortunately, von Karma wants to hear more of Phoenix's claim and wants Lotta to testify further.

Lotta's Testimony: Witness' Account Pt.2

Lotta
Lotta
Lotta's Testimony
- Witness's Account Pt.2 -
  1. When we broke into that room, all I could focus on was Maya.
  2. I was... uh, kinda scared of the dead body, so I didn't take a good look at it.
  3. I'm really bad when it comes to blood and ghosts and stuff.
  4. But I still managed to point my camera at Maya and take a shot!

Witness' Account Pt.2: Cross-Examination

Press against Lotta's 4th statement. You told her about taking two pictures and ask why she didn't told the court about it in the first place. Lotta says von Karma told her to not say anything about it. Von Karma?! Why would she do such a thing. You are given a choice. It doesn't matter which, but Confront Franziska would be more humorous.

Von Karma says the reason she didn't submit the second picture in court is she didn't think it would be much use. Von Karma finally submits Lotta's Photo 2, which will be added to the Court Record. It shows a clear shot of Maya channeling a different person. You can even see her face!

You are given a choice weather to insist or not. Insist it's not Maya. You tell the court it proves that somebody else might have taken Maya's place. However, von Karma is still smiling, as she has another trick up her sleeve. She presents the court another picture. It shows you, in the Detention Center, talking to Mia's channeled spirit! This proves to the court Maya's power! She took a picture at the Detention Center!? That's illegal, which is why von Karma didn't submit the photo at first.

Things are going downhill. You look at Lotta's second photo. You wonder if there is something wrong with it. Choose I can prove it. You examine the photo. Look at the left-hand sleeve. Wasn't there a bullet hole there? Present the sleeve to the court. If Maya was squatting and the sleeve had a bullet hole in it during the fight, then it should be in the picture as well.

The Judge accuses von Karma for hiding the evidence, but von Karma says she wasn't informed, and blames the precinct. The fact that the bullet hole is on the sleeve on the costume you have now, but not in the picture, which took place after the crime has confused The Judge. This is it, when given the choice, choose The shooter is someone else.

This leaves two questions though, where did Maya vanish to, and how did the mysterious woman sneak in? It looks like you have to look at this in a different angle. When given the choice, choose Maya had left the room. When asked to present how, Present the Black Key. There is only one key like this. Maya had the key when she entered the room. You saw Pearl with the key, and she is nowhere near the scene at the time of the crime! If that is so, then Maya might have left the room with the key!

With this, you have given The Judge a reason to adjourn court for today. You have frustrated von Karma, as she vows to win the case and get the guilty verdict no matter what it takes.

After the Trail

Maya says she doesn't recall ever leaving the room, and she doesn't recall a third person either. Maya has you take Pearl home.
