The New Nintendo 3DS is an enhanced version of the Nintendo 3DS, produced by Nintendo. It was first released in 2014 in Japan and Australia, and later released to the rest of the world in early 2015. In most regions, both a regular-sized New 3DS, and New 3DS XL with larger screens, are available; however, the XL is currently the only model available in North America. The New 3DS features several improvements over the original 3DS line, including:
- Superior processing power
- Increased RAM
- Near-field communication capabilities
- "Super-Stable 3D", using face-tracking technology to ensure a stable 3D image
- Longer battery life
- Built-in and buttons and , replacing the Circle Pad Pro add-on
The New 3DS retains backwards compatibility with almost all games released for the Nintendo DS, and all titles released for the original 3DS. The system's higher processing power means that a small number of games, such as Xenoblade Chronicles 3D, are only compatible with the New 3DS; other games, such as Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS, are compatible with both old and new 3DS, but will receive performance boosts and other additional features when played on a New 3DS.
