Cleanup required: Nintendo DS sidebar is a bit too large.

Cool, Cool Mountain is in the main room of the castle, in the door on the left, below the door for Bob-omb Battlefield. 3 stars are required to access it. The level is set on a snowy mountain, though be aware that you can fall off and die.

Star 1: Slip Slidin' Away

This star is obtained by entering the chimney near the start of the level and completing the slide without falling off. At a certain point, a row of coins points toward the wall; go along them to pass through the wall and you will enter a secret passage that has 3 1-ups and no risk of falling. Other shortcuts require looking at the map to find where some slide lines intersect.

Once you reach the bottom of the slide, go through the door to find the star waiting outside.

Star 2: Li'l Penguin Lost

Penguins reunited
Get anyone but Yoshi, and slide down the slide to the left of the chimney. Halfway down, when you make the 180 degree turn, slow down and jump to the right. You will see a blue coin switch and a drop at the left. Fall down the drop, and you will land somewhere near the mother penguin. Bring the baby to the mother, and the mother will reward you with a star.

On the snow-covered platform next to the chimney for the previous star, there is a blue baby penguin. Pick it up by pressing B button and take it to the mother penguin at the bottom of the mountain. Getting hit by an enemy or falling far will cause you to drop the penguin, which becomes harder to pick up as it moves around.

Once you bring the baby penguin back to its mother, she will give you the star. If you take the baby away from the mother, the mother will narrow her eyes and waddle towards you crossly until you give her baby back.

Star 3: Big Penguin Race

Go in the same chimney as for Slip' Slidin Away. There will be a large penguin waiting; he will offer to race you. Accept, and get to the bottom of the slide before he does. Taking the shortcut mentioned above is considered cheating.

If you are having trouble staying ahead of him, try long jumping (moving forward, press and hold Z button and press A button past him before you talk to him and he wont follow you, but you still get the star!

When you beat the penguin (without using shortcuts), he will give you the star.

Star 4: Frosty Slide for 8 Red Coins

Super Mario 64 DS

Before entering the course, you will first need to become Yoshi. When you get into the level, jump onto the house, then the chimney, and then the ledge above it. Jump down to the land where the fire is. Using A button, capture the fire in your mouth. Jump back onto the ledge where the block of ice is with the red coin inside it. Using A button, blow the fire onto the block: the block will melt and you can get the red coin.

For coin 2, you will need to slide down the slide. At the end of the slide, you will see a red Bob-omb. Beside him is a red coin.

For the 3rd coin, you just hop down to the ledge at the end of the slide, go to the place where the rope elevator drops you off and it's right there.

Hop back up and cross the bridge; there will be 2 ways to go, so go down a ramp on a snow hill with a broken bridge at the end. Go to the end of the bridge and there is your 4th coin.

Get off the bridge and go down the ramp to the right. At the end of the ramp you will see a house, a crying penguin, two trees, an elevator, and a cannon. Climb up the tree closest to the cannon, and the 5th coin is at the top.

Go back past the house and penguin and you will see an open space with a rope bridge and Goombas guarding it. If the Goombas cause trouble then stomp on them. Go to the icy block separating the two bridges and there is your 6th coin.

Get off the bridge and go to the very end of the open space. The 7th coin is in the corner.

For the 8th coin go to the rope elevator and climb on. Wait until it stops at the very top and get off. On the ledge were you found your 3rd coin there is a cannon. Hop in and look around until you find a ledge with a block of ice and a yellow ? box. Shoot yourself there. Again swallow the fire, go up to the ice block, and blow the fire. You now have the 8th red coin.

The star will appear. To get to it walk to the end of the ledge and jump off, run on the bridge and use Yoshi's special jump to get to the other end of the bridge. The star will be right there.

  • Note: After getting all 150 stars, you can race a fatter and harder version of the penguin. This time, there is no reward.

Collect the eight red coins spread around the level; then, get the star. The 1st coin is within view of the cabin, and is reached by climbing a tree. After getting this, look for the broken bridge near the starting location. Have Mario walk to the very last step on the bridge and he will be transported to the very bottom where the Mama penguin is. You can also transport back up to the top when you get the coins on that level. Then take the slide again to get the other coins.

The 2nd red coin is the hardest to reach. It is under the slide, where you see the second row of gold coins. Walk, don't slide at that point (you can make him walk by doing a little jump when you start to slide), then jump off of the slide, over to the right and onto the ledge below where the 3rd coin is hidden behind the sheet of ice. Before you jump down to that ledge, be ready to hold Z button and move Mario forward so he won't slide off, because it is very slippery down there. Get the 4th red coin, then go toward the box with the life. Get the life and proceed in the same direction and jump off where the giant snowball head is.

Continue to find the coins… the 5th is just around the corner. The 6th coin is just over the edge where the elevator comes up from the penguin level. Go where the two snowmen are jumping on the bridge and cross the bridge. Get a side view of the bridge as you go across and time the jumps where you can run under them as the snowmen are in the air. Don't touch them, just run under. You will see the 7th coin after you go across the bridge... go a little past the ledge and jump up to it to assure that you will have enough room without falling off… Walk carefully to the end of the bridge and get the 8th coin.

After you have found all 8 coins, the easiest way to get the star, is go on to the bottom level, then transport yourself on the broken bridge back up to the top where you started, then take the slide to the left again, but this time, watch when you get to the curve just before you make the last sharp turn to the left. Jump to your right across to the other side. When you get on that level, you can easily jump right down and get the star below it.

There are also two alternatives to getting the star once you have collected all 8 red coins. After you cross the bridge with the jumping snowmen, you can see a broken bridge with the star being on the other side. Position Mario at the very beginning of the flat ground that the broken bridge is connected to. Switch the camera to the "Mario" angle. Run to the end of the bridge and do a long jump(Run + Hold Z button + Hit A button) If you time it right, he will make it without any problems.

Alternatively, when sliding at the top of the big slide, fall to the left just after the first string of coins. It's a bit of a tight landing though.

Star 5: Snowman's Lost His Head

Go up on the platform next to the chimney, then straight to a wooden platform. This platform has a pedestal with a ball of snow on it. Approach the ball and it will talk to you, then start rolling down the slide. Go in front of it, but do not get too far ahead of it. Slide then run to the pedestal with the snowman's head. The ball will follow you so stand on the left side of the snowman's head to make a complete snowman. The snowman will then give you 10 Stars.

Star 6: Wall Kicks Will Work

Activate the cannons if you have not done so already by talking to the pink Bom-omb on the platform halfway up the lift on the bottom of the mountain. Then, take the cannon at the bottom of the lift and aim toward the ledge directly across. Try to catch on the tree by aiming at the rocks above the tree. Then, run down the narrow ledge, defeating the enemies along the way by punching them. Long-jump (run-tap-Z button then A button) across the gap.

Then, go to the lowest part of the platform above Mario, and either wall-kick or somersault (triple jump) onto it. Then, go near the high end. Run backwards a bit, then run up again and right away jump so that you somersault (triple jump). You need to hit the vertical part of the wall. If you do, then just as you hit the wall, press A button to do a wall kick and push the stick to the right. If done correctly, you will land on the top platform, it's a little tricky. Then, walk across the narrow ice path (carefully) and jump to get the star.

An alternative method is to go down to the platform where the snowman's body was before. Jump on the enemy there to fly and float down to the star.

In the DS Version, you can use Luigi's backflip move instead of the flower enemy.

Star 7: 100 Coins

This level has over 150 coins. You can get 80 along the slide at the beginning of the level and get 20 more around the level to meet your quota.
