Angel Studios was formed in 1984 by Diego Angel. The company began as a multimedia studio, well known for their 3D computer graphics. Angel Studios created the graphics for the 1992 film Lawnmower Man, and also won an MTV Music Award for Best Special Effects, for its work on Peter Gabriel's "Kiss the Frog" music video. Angel became a full-fledged video game developer in 1998 with the development of Major League Baseball Featuring Ken Griffey Jr. for the Nintendo 64.

Angel Studios also created the Angel Game Engine, which later evolved into the the RAGE Engine used today in the Midnight Club and Grand Theft Auto games. Angel became well known after porting Resident Evil 2 to the Nintendo 64, and developed other notable games, such as the well received Smuggler's Run, Midtown Madness series and Midnight Club: Street Racing. In 2003 the company was acquired by Rockstar Games and renamed Rockstar San Diego.
