Metroid Prime Hunters is based on Metroid Prime for the GameCube developed by Retro Studios, and takes place between Metroid Prime and Metroid Prime 2: Echoes. This time there are six other bounty hunters all fighting Samus over the alimbics, which are said to hold ultimate power. Metroid Prime Hunters features a relatively lengthy single player mode, wireless single-cartridge and multi-cartridge multiplayer, and a four player Wi-Fi mode.

Scoring
In the distant reaches of space, beyond the territories controlled by the Galactic Federation, is the Tetra Galaxy, once home to a mighty race known as the Alimbics. An advanced civilization, peaceful, prosperous, and powerful, the Alimbics maintained stability over the region forcefully but judiciously. They reigned over a vast region known as the Alimbic Cluster.

In this game, combos can be built up.  Every time the player build up a streak of kills, the score multiples.  In Regulator and Morph Ball modes, it starts with 1x10.  In Survivor mode, it only moves up by increments of one (1x1 to 2x2).
One day, perhaps thousands of years ago, perhaps tens of thousands, they simply disappeared, leaving behind artifacts scattered across the Alimbic Cluster, all protected by a lethal arsenal of the Alimbics' most advanced weaponry.

# 1 x 10 = 10
Today, for the first time in centuries, the long-dormant Alimbic Cluster has begun to stir, delivering strange tidings. A telepathic communiqué, originating within the Cluster, has been transmitted into the brains of some of the most exceptional beings in our galaxy. The message is translated into a thousand different languages on a thousand different worlds, but the message is always the same: "The secret to ultimate power lies in the Alimbic Cluster."
# 2 x 20 = 40
# 3 x 30 = 90
# 4 x 40 = 160

The highest possible legitimate streak in Regulator mode is 68x680 for a total score of 46,240. There have been higher reported scores, but these scores use glitches to achieve higher.  In Morph Ball mode, the highest possible streak is around 70x700.  A streak in Survivor mode lasts as long as the player can sustain the streak.
This message has intrigued and enticed some of the most formidable bounty hunters in the galaxy, inspiring them to make the long journey to the Alimbic Cluster. Each of these great warriors has his own motivations – while others simply desire to hunt and kill, to prove themselves the best bounty hunters in the galaxy. Now it's a race against time to see which bounty hunter will triumph and who will find the secret behind this promise of "ultimate power".

Control setups
The Galactic Federation has heeded this strange, suspicious communication as well, and has called for the help of Samus Aran.
Due to the technologies built into the Nintendo DS, there are several different types of control setups in this game that take advantage of the DS's touch screen pad. They include:
