Mystic Ark: Spells analysis
Healing spells & skills
These spells can be used anytime, both during battles and on the field. The two healing skills can only be used in battle, as any other skill. The characters who can use most of these spells are the Priestess and the female Hero.
In the game there is plenty of items that restore health points or magic points. Many of them are dropped by enemies.
Notice that there are no revive spells at all. If the Hero is defeated, the game is over and you have to restart from the previous save point. If an ally is defeated, he/she is reverted to a figurine: you have to leave the world where you are and retrieve the figurine from the starting point in the island shrine.
- Cure: This spell removes status ailments (poison, sleep, stone); sleep and petrify wear off after a while or at the end of the battle, while poison stays until this spell or an antidote is used. Users: learned very early by the Priestess and quite late by the Female Hero. Item: Antidote.
- Health, More-Health, High-Health: Four spells of increasing power that restore health points to a single target; the MP cost per restored HP is about the same: 17-18 HP/MP. Users: the Priestess learns them all, the two Heroes learn the first two, the Witch learns the third one.
- Full-Health: This ultimate healing spell is cheaper than the three above if used to restore at least 256 HP. Users: Priestess and Female Hero.
- Heal: it restores HP to all the party at once; if used on a party of three, its MP cost is cheaper than the health spells above: each MP restores 25 HP. Users: Heroes and Witch.
- Priestess' exclusive spells & skills:
- Prayer: Meisia the Priestess can regenerate about 20 HP per turn to herself only during combat.
- Compassion: Meisia the Priestess can regenerate about 15 MP per turn to herself only during combat.
- Heal-More, Heal-High, Full-Heal: Instead of the Heal spell, Meisia the Priestess learns three spells that are more powerful; the MP cost per restored HP is the same: 25 HP/MP.
Field spell
The game features just one spell that can be used outside battle only: Warp Gate. It teleports the party from anywhere to any save point in the same world. It is different from the Crystal item because the latter can teleport you only from one save point to another.
Users: the Heroes.
Support spells & skills
These spells and skills can be used during combat only. The characters who can use most of these spells are the Priestess and the female Hero.
- Power up:
- Power: it raises any one ally's attack by 20% for the rest of the battle; it can be stacked. Users: Priestess and male Hero. Item: power bottle.
- War cry: it raises the attack of each party member by 10% for the rest of the battle; it can be stacked. Users: Grappler and Ninja.
- Full power: it sets the user to Max Power status for two-three battles, then the status changes to Fatigue until the party rests at an inn; in Max Power status, Power and Guard are raised by 40% above normal, in Fatigue status, Power and Guard are lowered by 30% below normal; this effect cannot be stacked; it is best used against bosses at the end of a dungeon. Users: Ogre and Tetsujin.
- Guard up:
- Hard: it raises any one ally's defense by 20% for the rest of the battle; it can be stacked. Users: Priestess and female Hero. Item: guard bottle.
- Guard: it raises the user's defense by 25% for one turn; unlike the same skill in The 7th Saga, attack is not increased. Users: Grappler and both Heroes.
- Speed up:
- Speed: it raises any one ally's speed by 20% for the rest of the battle; it can be stacked. Users: Priestess and female Hero. Item: speed bottle.
- Magic up:
- Aura: it raises any one ally's magic attribute by 20% for the rest of the battle; it can be stacked. User: Priestess only. Item: magic bottle.
- Protection:
- Deathguard: the target becomes immune to instant-defeat spells for the rest of the battle; since there are no reviving spells (see above), this spell is quite useful; make sure you cast it on all your party members whenever you start a battle against instant-killer enemies. Users: Priestess, Ninja, both Heroes. Item: Cross (permanent!!!).
- Mirror: the target becomes immune to the next ten attack spell that the enemies will cast against him/her (or until the end of the combat); useful on physical characters that are vulnerable to magic attacks. Users: Witch only. Item: magic mirror.
Disabling spells & skills
These spells target one enemy and lower their abilites. There is always a chance that the spell misses, especially if the enemy's level is high. The bosses are usually immune to these spells. The Witch can learn four out of five effects below, the Ogre can learn the fifth one and two more.
- Paralysis:
- Wish song: the enemy falls asleep and will not act until the effect wears off. User: Priestess. Item: Abstruse book.
- Sleep: same as above, at the cost of a few MP. User: female Hero.
- Stone: the target is petrified until the effect wears off; same result as sleep, different status, therefore the two can be stacked; if one status wears off, the other one stays. Users: Witch and Ninja.
- Magic or MP down:
- Alluring eyes: repeated uses of this skill will drop the enemy's magic ability to zero, therefore its spells become harmless. It can be stacked with the Priestess' spell Aura. User: Witch.
- Curse: same as above, at the cost of a few MP. User: Ogre.
- Kiss of death: a great upgrade of the above; in a couple turns it prevents the enemy from using any spell, and replenishes the user's MP at the same time. User: Witch.
- Power down:
- Speed down:
- Slow: repeated uses of this spell will drop the enemy's speed to zero, therefore its attacks will always miss and it will never dodge. It can be stacked with the Speed spell. User: Witch.
- Guard down:
- Sick: repeated uses of this spell will drop the enemy's defense to zero, greatly increasing the damage suffered. It can be stacked with any power-up spell or skill. User: Ogre.
Attack spells & skills
Elemental attacks
- Fire:
- Fire, Fire storm, Fire Ball: single-target spells of increasing power. Users: the Witch learns them all, the male Hero learns the first two. Items: torch, flame pot, meteor bottle.
- Red burn, Heat cyclone, Prominence: multi-target spells of increasing power. Users: the Witch learns them all, the male Hero learns the second one only, the Ninja learns the first one only. Items: firecracker, oil bottle, hydra stomach.
- Breath: same as Heat Cyclone, at the cost of zero MP. User: Ogre.
- Ice:
- Cold down, Icerock nail, Ice split, Blizzard hole: single-target spells of increasing power. Users: the Ogre learns them all, the female Hero learns the first two, the second one is also learned by Priestess, Witch and Ninja. Items: ice rock, ice claw, blizzard bottle (no item for the Ice Split).
- Ice wall, Ice chain, Freezing hell: multi-target spells of increasing power. Users: the female Hero learns the first two, the Witch learns the second one only, the Priestess learns the strongest one. Items: glacier fragment, frost beads, orb of the deep.
- Thunder:
- Lightning, Plasma field, Blast bomb: single-target spells of increasing power. User: Tetsujin. Items: thunder scarab, diamond bomb (no item for the Blast Bomb).
- Laser, Wide ray, Spark: multi-target spells of increasing power. User: Tetsujin.
- Bolt earth: stronger multi-target spell. Users: Witch and Ninja. Item: plasma bottle.
Non-elemental attacks
- Spells:
- Earthquake: multi-target spell learned by the Ogre; later, he can learn the multi-target instant-defeat spell; useful early on in the game. Item: earthquake bell.
- Hurricane: multi-target spell learned by the Priestess; later, she can learn a fire multi-target spell stronger than this one. Item: tempest bell.
- Holy emblem: multi-target spell learned by the Priestess; later, she can learn a ice multi-target spell stronger than this one; the visual effect of this spell would have been heavily censored if localized in the USA: it features Christian and Greek-Roman symbols of holiness and medicine. Item: crowbar of light.
- Skills:
- Flurry: the earliest multi-target skill you will see in the game; it is a physical attack on all enemies. Users: both Heroes, Ogre.
- Blood suck: deals moderate damage to a single enemy, and restores the user's health points by the same amount. User: Ogre.
- Powerwave: it inflicts damage proportional to the user's current HP to a single target; i.e. it's more effective when the user is in good health. Users: Grappler, both Heroes.
- Kick, Smash: single-target and multi-target skills that either deal trmendous damage or miss. User: Grappler.
- Atomic, Full atomic: single-target and multi-target skills that deal high damage at the expense of some HP. User: Tetsujin.
- Illusion strike: performs a physical attack on two enemies at random; it can also target the same enemy twice. User: Ninja.
Instant-defeat attacks
These spells and skill can be used from the battle menus, but they are not used when the characters are set to "Auto" mode in battle. The Ogre and the Heroes are the main users of instant-defeat attacks.
- Figurine: it morphs a weakened enemy into a figurine; success rate increases if the monster has very few HP left and if its level is lower than the user's; enemies turned into figurines give you neither experience nor gold; you can then exchange monster figurines for items in the Monster arena. Users: both Heroes.
- Kill, Blackout: single-target spells with increasing success rate. Users: Ogre (both), Witch (stronger one only), male Hero and Ninja (weaker one only). Item: death symbol (kill)
- Death flare: you can speed up a battle by removing some opponents from the beginning; if you're lucky, this spell can wipe out all enemies in one hit. Users: Ogre and Ninja. Item: forbidden symbol.
Spells & Skills per character
In the following table, skills are grouped by menu command. If a character is set to use a command automatically, he/she will typically use the most advanced one in the list. Exception: all skills are used randomly when the automatic command is selected. Command spells and skills are not used in automatic mode.
Spells and skills unique for a single character are highlighted in bold. The following pairs of skill & spell have the same effect, therefore they are not highlighted:
- Sleep & Wish song
- Threathen & Draw
- Curse & Alluring eyes
- Heat cyclone & Breath
